This story is mostly magic academy with the country's common sense reversed to be pro-necromancer. The MC starts off fairly underpowered and once he levels up—by taking over some of his father's undead—he still has to hide a lot of his power in most school situations so the balance isn't too bad.

Some of the world-building is pretty half-baked. The school has absurd drop out/expel/endanger rates. The negligence and selfishness of the professors and academy head are next-level. The competition between students is pointlessly harsh. Many of the school challenges are barely overcome by the MC's team but everyone else in their classes manage. There are 14 freshmen class groupings but only 9 subjects and the first combined class only just happened with no fixed schedule so I can't even imagine the scheduling nightmare the school experiences daily (apparently neither can the author).

The characters and their relationships are a strong point. The biggest weakness is the MC who is good at everything but got a late start. I usually advocate for more romance but the starting friend group works great as friends and the more the girls fall for the MC, the more their dynamics suffer.

I'm taking a break for a little bit because the class challenges are feeling just a little too arbitrary and the power levels of the students are too comic book like (in that they are whatever the author wants for that scene), but I have enjoyed reading so far and am looking forward to more eventually. If it gets better after another 100 chapters like other reviewers say then I might update my rating to 5 stars. I don't think it has a slow start at this point, just a lot of disconnected scenes.
