Imagine you're Mu Qingyao, you're only seventeen and live a very hierarchical and sheltered life. And then you learn that your parents are not your parents and your brother is not your brother. You're the maids granddaughter, ergo you belong to a class of people reviled by pretty much everyone around you. Then the real daughter comes in and she is better than you for some inexplicable reason and now everyone picks your flaws against this girl who also derided at every turn because 'she's from the countryside'. You slowly lose every kindness given to you and at the end the person you've called 'dad' for your whole life beats you and don't even see you as a person.
I get Xu Xinduo suffered poor conditions and should be compensated but Mu Qingyao is not the villain and novels treatment of her bothers me so much. She is all but a child molded by a greedy father and a pushover mother, the decisions she makes are impulsive yes but also normal for someone in her position. But in the end she is condemned not just because of her actions but because everyone around her gave up on her and ab*sed her, just for something she had no say in.
