While this slice-of-life, historical story seemed right up my alley with delectable food descriptions and a soft romance in the background, something about it failed to keep my attention. I'm a fan of this translator's works which always involves a foodie romance or adventure, but this one was bland compared to others. I'll do a small breakdown on why I just can't continue this story (and even skipped to the end - which was sweet and expected).

TRANSLATION

Pure Love Translations does a superb job as always and even includes videos of the dishes featured in each chapter at the end. However, since this novel got a drama adaptation, the edited MTLers at MyDramaNovel finished the chapters up quicker under the name "Yummy Yummy Yummy." Both are great, readable, and easy-to-follow translations. Pure Love has more complexity in words/translation while providing supplemental food videos, while MyDramaNovel has easier flow on the simple side, which allows for a smoother read. Your mileage may vary, but I stuck with Pure Love Translations. Thank you both translation teams!

NOT A LOT OF DEPTH...

Going into the story, I expected something similar to ANCIENT FOODIE SURVIVAL GUIDE, which is my gold standard for historical foodie romance stories. CHANG'AN SMALL RESTAURANT doesn't have the relationship progression (familial, friendly, or romantic) that captures readers' hearts the same way. While the former focused on using food to forge relationships, the latter's focus on food is towards the community and world as a whole, lending it a more superficial perspective. Side characters shone in AFSG; in CASM, not as much (nonetheless, the characters certainly had personality).

The story starts with the FL Shen Shaoguang leaving the palace and catching the attention of the ML Lin Yan, the Deputy Magistrate who enforces the city's law. Our FL is a transmigrator whose new body is fallen nobility - a palace servant who was punished after her father was wrongfully convicted. Her new goal, as a food magazine editor in her previous life? Open a restaurant and live a comfortable, independent life. After all, this is Chang'an - the capital city of dreams and grandeur. (Giving NYC vibes set in ancient China and I'm here for it.) Let the adventure begin!

SLOW BURN ROMANCE

Except... There isn't much that happens outside of the FL's goal of establishing a restaurant. Our FL's story goes from running a morning breakfast stall to building her own homey restaurant that rivals huge restaurants and wine houses.

Don't get me wrong, I love the food descriptions and quiet scenes. My favorite in particular are when, during the late hours of the night after the kitchen is closed, the ML comes for a warm meal after his shift. However! I just feel like it's wasted potential; we don't get a ton of meaningful dialogue between the leads and although there is tension, there isn't as much chemistry as I would like. So if you're ready for a slow burn, expect a slowww burnnn.

The couple's progression is steady though - there aren't really impactful love rivals and their attraction/interest starts from the very beginning. I think the biggest obstacle at this time would probably be the status difference, as the FL is "fallen" nobility since her father's conviction, which I assume they address in later chapters.

ULTIMATELY HAPPY ENDING

Maybe I'm stopping right as the plot gets good, but I feel like it really slowed down at a crucial time (as I'm right in the middle of the main story). However, from my glimpse into the last chapters we do get a sweet and happy ending. Despite the nicely-written ending, I can't bring myself to slog through the middle of the story. This is a drop for me, but I do recommend this for slow-burn, slice-of-life, patient readers who love food. Plus, I will probably check out the drama since I'm a sucker for food-centered stories.

TL;DR I recommend this story if you like:

  • Hard-working, ambitious chef FL x strong and loyal officer ML
  • Slow burn romance in the setting of slice-of-life historical China
  • Lots of food descriptions
  • If you don't mind a meandering pace, and
  • Happy endings!!
