Scum Male’s Whitewashing Manual Chapter 33 Discussion

I was looking for something light and unusual to read, and stumbled upon this one mainly because of the oddball title.

  • Premise:
The protagonist is a... person? Spirit? Let's go with "entity". His job seems to be about traveling through time and space and possessing the bodies of the titular "scum males". Upon doing so, he gets an outline of the life of the arc's central female lead, and how things would turn out without his intervention, after which he sets out to avert this sad future and make the girl happy instead, and once it's accomplished, he moves on to a new body.

    • Setting:
Each arc has its own setting and time period. The first three arcs all take place in modern China, but based on the tags, this would change in later arcs. Other than that, there is not much else to say.

    • Characters:
Once again, each arc has its own characters. The protagonist entity, Wei Mingyan, doesn't have much of a character beyond taking on the original character of the body he inhabits, and then turning them around on a dime. Because we only see a couple of short paragraphs from his POV in every arc, his character remains very undefined, with only hints of a detached and professional attitude showing when he is not in the role of the person he is impersonating.

Because of this, most of the story is carried by the side characters and their reactions to the protagonist playing the role of the best, most doting, most perfect boss/father/husband/boyfriend/etc, and most of them, including the women she is "saving" from their original endings, are fairly one-note. Worse yet, the antagonists are all unrepentant a**holes who start out bad, and only get worse, always acting on jealousy and malice and never backing down. In other words, they exist just for the sake of the tired old face-slapping routine.

    • Plot:
The individual setups are different, but the actual plot is more or less the same in every arc: the young woman at the center of the arc is being mentally and/or physically ab*sed by a man and others, MC comes in, rapidly changes the personality of the person he is inhabiting, and then they reach a happy ending, with a couple of speed-bumps on the way, depending on the scenario.

This more often than not also involves the MC becoming insanely rich and successful and pulling the female lead with him into a high-class lifestyle. The methods of him achieving this are more often than not left incredibly vague and implausible, such as taking an orphan village troublemaker with zero money and connections, and making him into a millionaire owning a bike factory and an entire shopping mall in the span of a month or two.

At the end of the day though, the plot mainly exists as a vehicle to give a lot of feel-good scenes to the reader, and even though it is obviously that a lot of the heartwarming events come to be as a result of the MC's cold calculation, deception, and method acting skills, I would lie if I said I didn't get just a teensy bit misty-eyed every once in a while while reading them. That is the highest praise I can give to the writing skills of the author; the emotional manipulation works, even when you are fully aware of the fact that you are being manipulated.

    • Final Verdict:
The premise is fairly unique, the short arc format lends itself to reading in small chunks, and it works really well as literary comfort food. On the other hand, the characters are two-dimensional at best, with the antagonist being even more one-note than the rest, the MC is an undefined entity with a lot of agency but no discernible character, and the face-slapping scenes often come off as forced and especially unrealistic.

Overall, at the moment I would rate this story a solid 3.4. That makes it well above average, yet it is just too flawed and formulaic for me to give it a higher rating. That said, if you are looking for some heartwarming light reading that doesn't require too much effort to read, I would still easily recommend this novel. However, if you want something meatier, with actual nuanced characters, plots, or character development, you might also find this story wanting.

Without leaving much spoilers, I feel so bad for Fiona. The worst part was the way everyone seemed to be turning on her.
