I feel as though this Dio is what Dio tried to be in Phantom Blood. He is relaxed, be it self assured or disconnected from humans. I take it that he understands, with the Joestars gone, he will sit on the throne of the world. They are his only fear, and therefore he can avoid fits of anger, he has nothing to prove when it comes to the Hol Horse’s of the world. He is quick and effective with his orders. With fear of the Joestars being his last step to world conquest, that makes me incredibly curious what his overall motivations are proceeding that. And moreover, I am fascinated in seeing his reaction to taking a real blow, to see if he slips into the “HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO ME?!” weeps and shouts we saw back in the day.
To speak more about Phantom Blood Dio, the grotesque horror of him ordering the senator to drive on the sidewalk, an event that hits close to home for me, was a sobering moment. This isn’t just an evil cool guy, Dio is still repulsive, and even if he is near godly now; the cruelty he endorses is on a personal level such as burning a dog but fittingly worse in scale. And without a crippling sense of insecurity plaguing him, I happen to feel less pity and sympathy, more so fear and curiosity.
Despite the grotesque events of this chapter, Dio showcasing how the value of people has stayed at 0 for him since the day he decided to poison his dad, it still got a few laughs out of me. The senator’s sense of pride as Dio showed so much of his power in forcing him into subordination, representing a man who feels he is unstoppable just as Dio does but is on a different playing field. In thinking that Polnareff actually knew how to hot-wire a motorcycle for a moment before realizing he had no clue. And finally, in the horror of the sidewalk bloodshed when I glimpsed Waldo in the distance, talk about seriously dark humor Araki, holy hell!!!
Anyways, Kakyoin has made the first move in the three way car chase that has begun and we learned Dio's powers have a distance where they can be effective just as most stands do!
