I was so carried away I forgot to mention the fact that we got the layout of Dio’s mansion. That’s a cool touch and it only helps to collide this fight into the rest of the group making a dynamic encounter. A tangible place of contact is one of my favorite aspects of battle shounen, I love seeing the way each party member crashes into the others. Now, I don’t know if it will go there but I do hope so.
For now, the duo that started as rivals, Polnareff and Iggy, were fighting for their lives. Barely dodging the stand and Ice even taking a bite out of Polnareff’s foot to stagger his movement, things looked bad. The instant ability to devour chunks of the world is terrifying in itself, but Polnareff and Iggy managed to hide and create a sand Dio. I genuinely believed Dio had entered the scene and I panicked. Going with my topic of tangibility in the battle arena, the destruction was felt by a carefree Dio, reading a book as confident as ever alongside the Joestars and this following up with Dio’s appearance made sense. As if he wanted to check out what's taking so long. And as sand Dio went to slice at Ice’s back, he evoked the image of Santana facing the sun to me. A level of tenacity and grit that even when about to die, he simply acts, and does whatever it takes.
I do have to wonder though, how did Iggy know what Dio looked like! Did Iggy have a run in with Dio before or did Polnareff tell Iggy how to design the sand clone? Alternatively, Joseph has collected pictures of him and as Kajo_Senpai69 suggested, that could be a simple answer. With that understood, I still question how they emulated his voice and how they actually knew Vanilla Ice's name, I don't recall it being mentioned to the two of them.
