I think this arc is another great one to showcase the difference between the previous parts of Jojo and Stardust Crusaders. While Battle Tendency could be fun and cool and hilarious, nothing ever came close to the likes of how goofy and fun D’arby the Gamer is. Whereas D’arby the Gambler was unique but still in a realm of seriousness, the Gamer is on a whole new level of silly. This is like the embodiment of playing a video game with someone who you really don’t want to lose to. It’s the most relatable battle in all of Jojo for me. The seriousness of everyone watching, and the seriousness of the stakes, and the tension of the techniques is real yet ridiculous and hilarious. The way the guys chose the number for their car with such adorable reasoning too. Stands and the more comedic and lax style of Jojo can lead to unique arcs like this, and the insanity that was Alessi, and I adore it when it takes such an unexpected avenue.
To speak of the game itself, risking everyone's souls for the very important arm of Jotaro may not be absolutely insane, but I think if Jotaro did give up his arm instead of taking the challenge, that itself could be a form of defeat that Atum could take advantage of. I take it that Kakyoin will lose and it will be passed off to Joseph and he will also lose, or it will go straight to Jotaro; but that is obvious. However, if there is a stipulation that Atum doesn’t work in the same way as Osiris, it could create a loophole, that’s something Joseph assumed. That can spice this up. And as it would be poetic for Jotaro to beat down two brothers, I do like the idea of someone else finishing off the younger D’arby.
It’s also oddly fitting that Kakyoin wears shades now and a doll was made in his shape because in his introduction, the sun was framed on numerous occasions directly behind him, and he even used a puppet. I presume this is not intentional but it does make me reflect on his first appearance. That and his “you don’t need to know” solidifies him as the king of reusing lines in the most badass way possible.
