This was a fun arc. One that featured the badass, rule of cool side of the dynamic duo; Abdul and Joseph, and one that showed their adorable and goofy side too. I liked how we saw proof of what Abdul told Jotaro, that if he threw the iron bar in the first chapters, Magician’s Red would melt it in the air. I liked how we had that cheesy and badass ending, Abdul fixing his hair and the boys leisurely going off to get some breakfast as if they were not just heavily injured. And I especially liked seeing Joseph play for time after Mariah confessed that she fancied him. It reminded me of his bluff with Wham back in his youth. With that, the chapter ended with Mariah being crushed- or wait it wasn’t over yet.
I think it’s rare for Stardust Crusaders to end an arc with a cliffhanger, as I’ve been watching the anime on the side, I noticed it often adds cliffhangers whereas the manga ends abruptly. It makes the decision to add Alessi at the end a little fascinating to me. And the way he came in was effective. The page of Polnareff wholesomely smiling at the innocent play of the children nearby is my favorite kind of Jojo page. The pages that transfer so much heart in a small, sweet moment. Just as Polnareff smiled, I did too; it reminded me of Mei playing ‘chores’ in Totoro. Which made for Alessi to crush that innocent play with his huge ego and bullying to be effective. Far more than Steely Dan kicking a kid that I didn’t care about. I cared about these kids for the few panels I knew them and then that occurred. Although to be fair, even before Alessi showed up, I, for a moment feared that the mud they were playing with would be a killer stand.
