Jotaro and Polnareff had to handle this horrendous stand alone. Specifically, to showcase Polnareff defeating Anubis as the best counter to it, being able to parry, yet being studied and turned useless against it was a nice touch. For a moment I thought the young Joseph inside Polnareff was being tested. Just like in the Devil, Polnareff was a real buffoon, but when forced into a fight, he did some quick thinking. By blinding Anubis and shooting his projectile rapier, he was onto something. However, Joseph would have planned for the attack to miss and not needed saving.
Jotaro was there in time to save Polnareff, but doing so only gave away some of his strength. Then put in the most difficult situation of this arc yet, Jotaro caught the dang blade!!! It was a moment that I saw Jonathan in his place, vividly catching that knife on Ogre Street. I love the moments where a Joestar can evoke a memory of the first, the moment Jotaro caught the glass being reminiscent of Jonathan catching the snakes is my other favorite of Stardust Crusaders. But it didn’t stop there!! Jotaro tore the sword in half and if there is a user, that should have hurt them badly. Unfortunately, after comically requesting throwing it into the river as if the major villain of the arc didn’t rise from the ocean, and we hadn't already seen what looked like it’s control of animals, Polnareff was taken over. The worst fate possible, the great swordsman Polnareff now possessed by Anubis and set up against his friend.
