The tentacles were not a power of Steely Dan, he simply activated a spore that Dio implanted, a method to kill Enya if she ever got put into a situation like this. What was powerful about this however, was how it showed some of that supposed Dio charisma in boatloads. Enya committed her life to Dio, she trusted him and after J. Geil died, she lived for him. We don’t know exactly how she was bought over to this extreme, but even when betrayed, she refused to give him up. I think this spawns two interesting points.
The first is about Enya herself. She had a hard life. She had been involved in awful things, beating cats, using corpses and trying to murder people, following a man as sinister as Dio. Yet, as much of a mess as she was, she was a pawn, and despite wanting to continue the chain of vengeance that came from her son’s murder, she failed, and was offed by the man she trusts most. The irony here is, Dio probably risked her telling his secrets more by attempting to kill her, if she didn’t give him up as she was betrayed then there was no way she would have given him up if she wasn’t. There’s a level of ambiguity and pity we can feel for this woman, as much as we can all agree that she was probably awful.
The other point is something I’ve been observing throughout Stardust Crusaders. Dio, despite us knowing him well, has been shrouded in mystery. His power, his broader motives, and even his face has been kept from us. In Phantom Blood, we had a study of why he was the way he was from chapter 1. We knew mostly everything about him and understood why he did what he did better than anyone else. Even in his plans, the blank spaces we didn’t fully understand were predictable and easy to understand. To contrast Stardust Crusaders, this Dio’s last four years and the way he’s grown is elusive. The most we get to see of him is mysterious conversations and the words of his followers. Whereas Phantom Blood had Dio as a personal and tragic villain, Stardust Crusaders has him as an ominous and mysterious final boss. The character may be the same, but his role in the narrative couldn’t be anymore different and that is how you reuse a character!!
Getting back to this chapter, the boys hated Steely Dan for his cruelty, but his confidence was visible, he was surrounded and calmly drinking tea. When attacked we learned that any damage he sustains will go straight to Joseph, only amplified. This reminds me of another One Piece power actually, the character Hawkins exhibits a somewhat similar albeit more mysterious power. What this means however, is that Joseph has been attacked by another stand that is attached to his body, poor luck, huh? As for Steely Dan I adore his design, the confident introduction, the Dracule Mihawk-type spiraling eyes. His handsome face and jagged eyebrows. He’s my kinda guy! Shown hitting that kid to make sure we know how evil he is.
