This is continuing to be my favorite stretch of the manga since those brilliant first chapters! Firstly, Polnareff is definitely showing off why he’s a fan favorite from what I’ve heard. Just as my first excitement revealed when he had a very different goal than the rest, it has created in-group conflict and isolated him! Only after Abdul also got a strong moment, trying to stop his new friend from throwing away his life. The panel of him walking away from the group was an excellent one, as everyone stood back, understanding they couldn’t stop him. Abdul almost fought him again as that would be the only reliable way.
Meanwhile, we get a serious duo of enemy stand users. We see they are working together while understanding, to some degree, each other's powers. This denotes teamwork most selfish villains probably wouldn’t want to risk as revealing their stands to each other also reveals their weaknesses. I know this predates One Piece, but it really reminded me of One Piece. The mysterious bad guys, getting characterized while hinting at their powers.
Hol Horse was almost introduced as a sexy, drifting but good hearted cowboy. However, as he embraced his girl, he let out an evil smirk. From the intro card which stated he was the holder of the Emperor I had wondered if his power would be the ability to force others to follow his orders, just like an Emperor could. Seeing him manipulate this girl, as he suggested he does to many as to have a wide selection of people who would die for him, seemed to reinforce this idea. Further, this villain also reminds me of a side to Dio not unlike some of the others, as Dio could be charming and create a front to draw people in and largely did and still is controlling many people as pawns under him. This was only challenged when Hol Horse summoned in a phantom gun to help out his ally J. Geil. J. Geil whose face continues to be shrouded in darkness ended up finishing the snake off with his stand in the reflection of a bottle. This time it proved to us that the stand is incredibly frightening. It does not need to leave the surface, if it can reach the reflection of its enemy, it can slice it and hurt them. This means any small object, including a glass shard, could be fatal and hard to fight against.
With this, we have the two most built up villains, excluding Dio and Enya, together and cooperating openly. Having succeeded in drawing out Polnareff, he now faces both of them. Let’s hope the gang tailed him and isn’t so far away. The last time this kind of split in the party happened with Caesar, Joseph was too late to save him.
