I like this!! Big focus on Polnareff, my favorite character after Joseph for Stardust Crusaders thus far. And funny enough, he reminded me of young Joseph here. I feel like he can be jovial and friendly but he’s quick to be brash, and while not standoffish like Jotaro, he can definitely be rude. He can also be a little questionable in his intelligence too. Of course, he’s not at all like the lazy Joseph of the beginning of Battle Tendency, he willingly trained and willingly set out on this mission. Yet they have that similar expressive air to them and with Joseph now being funny but more collected, it’s nice. With Polnareff previously talking about tossing the girl overboard, or now telling her to stop bugging them, or saying she’s poor so they feel bad for her. It’s super funny, and he also got the comical moment of intimidating the cop, even getting a laugh out of sir Abdul! Seeing the little sides of the characters and how they enjoy each other on this arduous journey is great for bonding the crew. “You guys want some gum?!”
But it wasn’t all fun and games, or a cool look into the journey mapped out. Instead, it got creepy. I haven’t felt time to talk about the obvious yet, but one the introduction of stand’s most interesting aspects is the confusion regarding them. We got a large part of the last battle dedicated to slow tension building and trying to understand what the threat even is. Here, we got some of that again but paired with the cool and serious side to Polnareff. As soon as he smelt something suspicious, the hilarity of hiding in the fridge after moving everything out of it, he confronted the stand user proudly. With that, he struck down the creepy Devo but Devo did all of that on purpose. The scars on his body denote that he’s taken many attacks intentionally before and by doing so he fuels his hatred of his opponents and that is what the Devil stand uses as power. Disappearing, having a mysterious doll in the room, and slicing off a piece of Polnareff’s leg off, has to make us wonder, what the heck is going on. I do think it would be cool if the doll was attached to another one of the coming stand users but perhaps it’s linked to the defeat of this mysterious fighter.
