Tower of Gray took down the pilots and sent the plane into a crash course, something that already had me chuckle as this isn’t the first time Joseph has been in a plane crash. The fact that he later noted it himself was a great touch and got a big laugh out of me. The curse of Joseph Joestar! He may have had a pilot for a father which was also a dream of his, according to the character page at least, meaning he’s put in some time flying planes but it never goes pretty. Overall to bridge the plane attack of Tower of Gray to landing in Hong Kong and igniting another fight this time focusing on Avdol and setting a new plot direction creates a great sense of pacing. Definitely what we’ve come to expect from Jojo, but nonetheless greatly appreciated.
Further, we got some good characterizing moments. Firstly with Jotaro and Kakyoin, girls love Jotaro but he could never use that to his own benefit because he’s way too standoffish. Kakyoin however sparked a fight with the girls when he was introduced, a fight over if he was better looking than Jotaro. It seems in universe Jotaro’s a little better looking, but Kakyoin has the ability to utilize his womanizing abilities akin to a certain Zeppeli. He’s certainly got more tact than Jotaro does. Beyond that, later in Hong Kong, Kakyoin is shown understanding the customs of Hong Kong, with that and how he stumbled upon Dio while traveling; it goes to suggest he is quite cultured. Just as his stand has much utility, so does he as a person. Avdol also, with knowledge of Tower of Gray and how he was bought over by Dio’s charisma/ideals/power rather than brainwashing, is continued to be characterized as a knowledgeable and wise sensei type. Yet one with fire inside of him of which he can control.
Landing in Hong Kong forced the gang to move to land and sea, they plan to use the sea to reach Dio in time. This makes the roadtrip far more engaging than a flight right to Cairo. That was when another one of Dio’s followers attacked with Silver Chariot, using Avdol’s fire against him and declaring a fight with a flaming clock ticking down. I’m starting to think with Kakyoin’s note, Tower of Gray’s bloody massacre message, and now a flaming clock of death, with two of these villains having announced their plans before attacking, that it may not be worth reading into too much. It’s fun shounen villain stuff.
