Dio’s brainwashing is now something different. In the original, I swear he could just look at people and tell them commands. Yet his new method still makes me feel he’s vampiric, as vampires had control over their flesh and, although Dio never did anything like the flesh buds, the Pillar Men absolutely did! Shooting their flesh onto Joseph to slow him down, bending their ribs backwards as weapons, that kind of thing. And like, when he confronted Avdol, who saw just how fine of a specimen Dio is, he absolutely used his hair with the flesh like a juiced up Bruford. While still hiding his face from us at that!
The real star of this chapter was Jotaro Kujo though. As hilarious as he was when he came home early with a bloodied classmate and ignored his mom, his good heart shone through. I assumed he would be a tsundere, he’s a bit anti-social, gruff and tough, but he cares for people. With Kakyoin especially, he risked his life fighting against the flesh bud and doing manly brain surgery! He revealed that, while he looks nervous, he still has guts of steel and pulled that thing out. It was quick too, he refused Joseph’s suggestion to leave him alone and saved his life as if he had to. And just like with the page where he checked on his mom, I adored the final page of this chapter. Kakyoin asking why, and Jotaro not having an answer. Good guy Jotaro pages hit me in a way that’s kind of new for Jojo. I don’t know how to put it exactly, but I like Jotaro’s gimmick. It’s sweet. Kakyoin must feel very indebted to Jotaro now, maybe he’ll put a Speedwagon.
Since I don’t have all that much to write this time, I wanted to add in a thought I’ve had since Avdol’s first appearance. He reminds me of Messina and Loggins from Battle Tendency, yet a far better version of them. When the duo was introduced into Battle Tendency they were excruciatingly simple and throw away characters we knew had no importance but to potentially die. Despite that they were trained ripple fighters with an archetype similar to the wise and loyal Avdol, however Avdol has a unique power, and his character stands out because he’s been given time to stand out. By the way, speaking of ripple, I’m glad Joseph used some here!
