Basically you start off with a weak MC that's very kind and does whatever he can to be useful.

Then stuff happens, and Hajime, the main character, changes drastically. The rest of the story is mostly action, adventure, comedy, and harem. However, the part that sets it above other novels, in my opinion, is that it also depicts the protagonist slowly regaining what he's lost.
