ML is the 8th prince, Xuan wang, Feng dye ( in mtl)... like in that other novel, Tyrannical wang’s beloved wife, ML plays the public’s perception of him as a dandy playboy to hide his strength, but in this novel his emperor father plans for him to inherit the throne, idk what happened in the 1st life that made ML go and eventually went missing in the Nanban(?) kingdom. There seems to be a secret behind his concubine mother’s identity and death but since i jump chapters, still looking for it

I am in the middle.
So the mother seem to be the daughter from the last dinasty (?). She is related to Bai Yizhen family so MC is his cousin. They made her mother so sign a marriage contratc with BY.
The father loved the mother but because of her family he didnt want to let the emperor know he favoured her in case the emperor knew who she really was.
He thought she was well protected in the country side.
First sister ends up marrying Sima. He goes to his cousin the first night. You youcheng also wanted to marry MC. He kind of has a love hate relationship with her. So he plans with first sister to kill MC. Sister helps him and he changes her identity to marry her.
So after three days first sister goes back to her family and makes MC to visit MC mother grave to attone for her past mistakes. The father is happy so both first, MC and third sister go.
The carriage falls near a mountain and that was to kill MC. I believe MC is saved by ML. Third sister dies. And fist sister is conspired against by ML.
They make her appear in front of Sima house close to You youcheng brother.
Then Sima lets people rape her and she gets pregnant. Afterwads Sima goes to her family and explains that she is evil and plans to kill her sister. MC comes and solves the situation against both. Sister dies after and Sima loses his position.
Also the grandma conspires against her and his father. The cousin no idea how is going to marry you youcheng brother.
Grandma wants to give cousin a lot of dowry that is not hers to give. Mc comes and asks for the documents to prove it. But also a maid finds a book that shows that MC father is bribing people...

Basically MC’s dad was a typical man of his times. He truly loved MC’s mom but both he and she were aware of her true identity and the fact that should her identity be found out their whole family could potentially be executed. The concubines were actually MC’s mom’s idea including dad having older children then younger shu children with the idea being that if the emperor ever did find out about MC’s mom’s identity he’d be more inclined to believe that dad had no idea about mom’s identity spare his life and Xuetong’s life as an unremarkable middle child.
Men weren’t meant to look at or meddle in their harem. Pre MC’s mom dying his relationships with the concubines were duty crafted as a mask to hide his love and devotion to his wife done at his wife’s urging with her consent. He like many idiot men we see in these novels never would have expected one of his concubines to plot to murder his wife or manipulate the scenes behind his back to put his daughter in a bad light. Once Tong’er breaks through that haze he watches all of them a lot more closely which is part of the reason why she’s able to accomplish things at home later.
