So that was the first Volume of Berserk.

Interesting especially after having seen the Movies first!

All 3 chapters were good and solid! 8,5/10!

Nice end to the first volume! I definitely need to try to pick up some more!

Guts is a really interesting MC. He is a badass, but done right. Of course I don't know much about him but there is clearly something past the surface. His rough and tough demeanor defiantly seems to have a level of depth to it. And I can't wait to pick up another volume and discover this part of Guts!

Volume Score: 8.3/10

Chapter Score: 8/10

That old man is the creepiest thing in this manga yet lol.

The quote about Guts' sword is repeated, likely a reminder before his confrontation with Lord Zondark. Zondark states that the size of a weapon is nothing more than baggage if not handled properly. In other words, the challenges and traumas will only weigh us down if we can't utilize them in some capacity. Unluckily for him, Guts is fueled by his past experiences and easily manages to win.

There is also a brief exploration of fear and paranoia, eerily reminiscent of the culture of mistrust practiced in the Soviet Union. This religious authoritarian figure's paranoia about heretics has resulted in everyone living caged inside their own homes, constantly vigilant and suspicious of one another. This atmosphere underscores an aspect of self-preservation, as people become more concerned with their own safety, isolating even friends and family.

I think my favorite part of this manga thus far is the art. The attention to detail is truly magnificent... especially where intestines are involved.

It's weird, but I feel like I'm really going to have an exceptionally strong love/hate liaison with Guts. He's a certified badass to be certain, yet he's a few steps beyond "badass" into "callous," and I get the impression he's swiftly approaching "psychotic." I can't wait to see how he's developed; I already have my theories.
