Chapter 118

The Beast of Darkness

I feel like it's Guts' shadow and the way I see it, it might just be slowly becoming real.

Also, loved Puck here and the fact that he finally won Guts' confidence!

Lol, a flashback within a flashback. Jill telling Guts about her childhood with Rosine, then further flash backing to when their village got into a conflict and Rosine’s mom couldn’t escape. Just an observation.

Any who, I really, really like the Jill character. Something about her is very mature, and not prone to succumbing to her awful, humdrum of a life. I feel characters in Jill’s state would be constantly breaking down and crying, but her stoic state is pretty inspiring. Not to mention, this is the most dialogue she’s spoken consistently… explaining the village’s past, and her and Rosine’s past… not to mention the entire story of the elf outcast, as told by Jill. In fact, not once was she intimidated by Guts, even understanding as he had to escort her out of the village at knifepoint. Every time Guts causes an uproar in his village, she lingers after him — not even asking for his help, but offering him HER help in anyway she can.

Most of the time when someone cries in an anime or manga I roll my eyes, and seldom do they get it right… but Berserk always hits home. Whether it be Guts — maybe Casca — … but there was something very mature about Jill doubling down with teary eyes after Guts’ remarks. “It’s frustrating… and embarrassing.”

She clearly wants to be of aid and is tired of being powerless on account of her age. Some of this irritation probably stems from her life at home… she’s clearly more mature than her father but cannot raise a finger to him.

Finally, she’s a female character that doesn’t get sexualized, like all the others do. I recall in the other chapter that Jill’s father’s friend tried lusting after her, but I’m hoping that never evolved into anything major. Jill seems like the first female character in a WHILE that can just be a normal, undramatic aid to Guts. (She’s got her own dilemmas at her village, but by Berserk-standards, her life could be worse.) But yeah, I appreciate the zero fan service of this girl, who’s just entering her teenage years (I think). She’s a great example of female characters done-right in this franchise. Maybe even the first example lol.

[Actually, the Rosaline Apostle, despite being totally naked, also hasn't been sexualized yet. Which is cool too.]

Also, as of late, Guts really does seem to be going Berserk. Like when he massacred the burning child apparitions, even the ones searching for their mothers, all with a grin. And he did it all with a smile (to which Puck commented that he was ‘far gone’).

I mention this because of Guts’ reaction to Jill’s fairy tail and his explanation of the Behelit. That panel showing half of Guts’ face as he is ominously grinning. “Her parents… vanished, you say?”

Oh, thank goodness it isn't a crimson behelit even though I know its rare.
