Yay, he chose Dark. Choosing light would've been unintersting and going for both would've been just lame. And yay for the Nodoka's appearence.
Going for both at this point would have been waaay too early anyways. It wouldn't have given him time struggle with the whole personal dilemma of using dark magic or there wouldn't be any sense of accomplishment if he suddenly combined them. And you're right, choosing Light would have been boring.
I personally still think in the long run he'll end up combining Dark and Light magic. It fits his personality well to use both, I think. Considering Asuna is his first, and in my eyes "main" partner, it seems appropriate that he find a way to combine Dark and Light, since she can combine Magic and Ki. Lastly, if he truly wants to surpass his father, I don't think simply following his footsteps with Light magic or following Evangeline's footsteps with Dark magic will do it. Finding a way to combine and use both equally though...
If he does manage this, I don't expect to see it for a while though. It's purely hypothetical, but I'm kind of anticipating a fight with Fate where Negi starts going "overdrive" and really taking a beating from his own Dark magic, but still not having quite enough to defeat him. It seams likely that at this point Asuna would try to smack some sense into him for being so self-destructive. Perhaps at this point he has a revelation that he could try combining the two... either that or Asuna becomes absurdly powerful due to her memories somewhat returning or something and she (and possibly Negi's other partners) end up swinging the battle.
Ah well, not point in guessing so much I suppose. I'll just have to wait and see.
Hopefully we get more of Nodoka next chapter, though. That's a rather nifty ring she got. ;)
EDIT: Hmm, I seem to have repeated a lot of what I said in the 204 discussion. Ah well. :p
I also agree, I wasn't expecting him to choose both at the same time. At some point in the story he will realize that he has to learn both in order to truly cheat the system and become stronger, faster. I honestly can't see Negi going 100% dark anyway. He can barely cope with his own trivial problems in real life so I doubt he can deal with constant darkness and depression.
