GetBackers Chapter 1 Discussion

                        GetBackers was one of the earliest anime series I ever saw, finding it randomly ondemand before I really even got into anime as a medium. And when I did start getting into it, it was one of the first I seeked out, and it's one of the few anime I own the complete series on DVD. Ultimately, I think the series was just kinda average but there's sentimental value there, so I always wanted to read the manga.



It's been over five years since I saw the anime, so I only vaguely remember the stuff here, and I want to say the Final Fantasy stuff didn't make it into the anime, but I definitely remember the stuff with the homeless guy. I like the introduction of Ban and Ginji and the premise, where it's set-up like they're bad-asses but they're just trying to get out of a parking ticket lol. Their money problems took a lot of the center stage here, and Ban wasn't exactly the most likable here (though him immediately going to help Ginji once he decided he was going was nice), but it's a solid start to the series. Weird that Ginji can produce electricity like that and they still got pummeled by the guy but I suppose they didn't want to hurt him much since they were bullying a kid.



I do kind of wish Ginji's powers weren't established with him choking Ban, and instead they waited until the replacement candle bit, that's a pretty great scene. The manga's artstyle is a bit rough, but moments like that were drawn really well I thought. And I like the hints towards the Jagan/Evil Eye.
