                        How can Mikami be so careless..

I know, that also really surprised me. I guess he's sure of himself because

1: Kira's on his side, and Kira is god (in his eyes at least)

2: He has the Shinigasami's eyes and can pretty much take care of anyone without have to even come near them.

So I guess he;s pretty sure of himself.
