The biggest play yet - combined with chapter 53 = insane writing skills.
But even though L doesn’t know about ownership of the death note and all that, i still find it a bit out of character for L to let Light hold on to the death note, and especially for what seemed to be minutes. But L just saw a Shinigami for first time and he is now dealing with something supernatural. L ones said, that if they are dealing with gods-will, they should just give up. I think all of this stuff is in his mind at the moment, when the shinigami Rem is revealed to him. L and Light are genius’s, but still human and as L pointed out earlier in the arc, when Light played the role as L, over the phone in a conversation with Namikawa, Namikawa tricks Light to tell him that Higuchi is Kira and L saids “That was a screw-up by Yagami-Kun” - this tells me that L and Light are still able to make mistakes, even though they are so highly intelligent. L makes a mistake in this chapter, by letting Light hold on to the death note, but that might be fine.. If they weren’t human and not able to make mistakes, I don’t think there would be a story.. it would just boil down to a dilemma, something like “when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object” - and that story is in my opinion impossible to tell, cause nothing would be uncovered.. therefore the dilemma. Love this story though - glued to the page. 4/5 for this chapter, but only cause of L’s actions - otherwise 5/5! But then again.. this is death note we are talking about.. so I wouldn’t think it to be impossible that L LET THIS HAPPEN ON PURPOSE, and he now will use it to his advantage, that he knows about the death note and the fact that Light held the death note, when Higuchi died. L could use this to build an even stronger case against Light. I really don’t see L or Light ever taking a backseat and gettin beat by the other as “easily” as the author makes it seem in this chapter. L an Light are both active characters, who are molding the plot, and not the other way around. They do not just let the story happen to them, they take control. I now think that there must be a reason for L to stay put in this chapter.. It could be a trap by the author. I hope i am right in this. If that is the case, I will let this comment stay as it is and just change the score to 5/5 (this would obviously make this review a spoiler, so can’t do that..) and be even more amazed by the writing skills of this manga. Or would this then make Light naive, because he underestimated L? Would make more sense though, since Light has underestimated L once before..Maybe I should just read the next chapter.
