I used to think nothing of Ryuk's obsession with apples. At most, maybe as just some quirky personality trait. But with all the talk of divinity in this chapter, I can't help but imagine a connection between the apples Ryuk eats and the forbidden fruit of immortality mentioned in the Bible. It kinda makes sense that Ryuk would have such a craving for apples as a God of death. Reading Death Note isn't much different from watching the anime, but little nuggets like that make the read completely worth it.
