That is an interesting point the kid brings up. If Leo knew how bad and scary Earl was, why didn't he just turn away from him? Was his heart broken that much that he didn't care?
Interesting story so far, like how Allen's story is unraveling.
I think it's BECAUSE he knew about the Earl that he turned to him. It's essentially like finding out who the devil on Earth is, knowing how all-powerful he is, and having the option to turn to such a being when you need something done.
It's interesting how being informed about Akuma and the Earl actually puts you more at risk for falling victim to it. In most manga, informing the general populace about the danger that's out there is the last-resort option once things get really bad.
tl;dr, Hoshino must have used a lot of copy-paste in this chapter.
