Now seems like a good time to discuss all the recent on-goings of the Buu Saga, seeing as this is a transitory point in the story. I'll be honest, I've been biting my tongue on here for one simple reason, the Buu Saga peaks here imo. I've always considered the start of the Saga to be really excellent, but my opinions start to go sour from here, though I haven't went through the series proper in years, and I never read the manga so hopefully it's different.
Either way, I really enjoy the development here. Vegeta's regression to his evil side just to fight Goku does feel a bit out there, but you could see how much he valued the fight earlier and how irritated he was getting about losing the chance. In a way weird, it's kind of affectionate. And I guess you could see his comments to Gohan going soft being a sign of this too, he was seeing the weakened Gohan and realizing he might be falling in the same trap, which is definitely averse to who he was as a Saiyan for so long. I guess when I put that thought out there, it flows better.
Regardless it works well to remind us how far Vegeta's development comes, which makes the following actions land more. The realization of his wrong-doing while talking to Goku (though he still knocks him out), apologizing about Gohan (to a knocked out guy), his goodbye to Trunks, his brief discussion with Piccolo about whether he'd see Kakarot in the afterlife, to his internal goodbye to Trunks, Bulma, & Kakarot, it's all a fitting end for the Saiyan Prince. Pity he didn't accomplish anything as Buu is alive and well. I suppose he let them get away which is enough. The brief fight with Goku was a lot more hype in the anime though.
