It’s pretty hard to be sad over Vegeta’s death. He’s literally the reason why Cell became so powerful and the awakening of Buu in the first place, just because he’s a grown man with the brain of a child. And his death couldn’t even fix anything.

Now seems like a good time to discuss all the recent on-goings of the Buu Saga, seeing as this is a transitory point in the story. I'll be honest, I've been biting my tongue on here for one simple reason, the Buu Saga peaks here imo. I've always considered the start of the Saga to be really excellent, but my opinions start to go sour from here, though I haven't went through the series proper in years, and I never read the manga so hopefully it's different.

Either way, I really enjoy the development here. Vegeta's regression to his evil side just to fight Goku does feel a bit out there, but you could see how much he valued the fight earlier and how irritated he was getting about losing the chance. In a way weird, it's kind of affectionate. And I guess you could see his comments to Gohan going soft being a sign of this too, he was seeing the weakened Gohan and realizing he might be falling in the same trap, which is definitely averse to who he was as a Saiyan for so long. I guess when I put that thought out there, it flows better.

Regardless it works well to remind us how far Vegeta's development comes, which makes the following actions land more. The realization of his wrong-doing while talking to Goku (though he still knocks him out), apologizing about Gohan (to a knocked out guy), his goodbye to Trunks, his brief discussion with Piccolo about whether he'd see Kakarot in the afterlife, to his internal goodbye to Trunks, Bulma, & Kakarot, it's all a fitting end for the Saiyan Prince. Pity he didn't accomplish anything as Buu is alive and well. I suppose he let them get away which is enough. The brief fight with Goku was a lot more hype in the anime though.

It's so weird that Vegeta turns into stone with his explosion.

Anyway, Vegeta. I guess if anyone has read my thoughts on here, I'm not the biggest fan of his development throughout the series. This is a pretty good moment, Vegeta sacrificing himself for others, apologising for Gohan's death and saying goodbye to Trunks. It doesn't hit that hard for me as I know it does for many others though, for two reasons.

First, Vegeta is a jerk. He's pretty much been a passive villain since his move to earth after the Namek arc. In the Cell arc, Vegeta killed innocents and allowed Cell to become perfect.

At this point in the series, he's really only done two things I consider good:

1. Hitting Cell with a blast, helping Gohan to win and taking revenge for Trunks' death.

2. Supposedly taking Trunks to the amusement park and maybe being an okay father overall, as Trunks seems to like him.

It's difficult to feel sad for someone that has done that little good and mainly fucked things up for our heroes. Still, this sacrifice only works for him if he's actually evil. The sacrifice becomes a big moment in his development and a fitting end to his character. So I do like that.

But the second reason is comparing it to what has come before and what will come later. Vegeta has already died once. It was a great moment. It wasn't as grand as this sacrifice, but it was very much a fitting end to his character. Being killed by Freezer, crying and begging Goku to avenge him as a saiyan, love it. And that was Namek arc-Vegeta, which is probably my favourite character in the series. That hit me a lot harder than this death.

And of course, Vegeta does come back. And I suppose after this sacrifice, we get the actual "good guy Vegeta" and him being fully reformed. And yeah, I have less problems with Vegeta after this sacrifice, but it also makes the sacrifice itself not actually be a sacrifice. Maybe I'm harsh but I think Vegeta deserves some kind of punishment, and he never gets one.
