I didn't like how his family was playing the victims acting like he was the one at fault. He only became like that because they acted like they were scared of him and then shunned him. That flashback at the hospital where the mom says "Don't you love us anymore?" was baffling to me. Well lady, you treat your kid like he's some sort of freak and you even flinched when he tried to touch you so it wouldn't be surprising if he didn't love you. Then when she's basically begging for forgiveness, she still treats him like a pariah.
