Yeah, and you would be surprised how many people will say they liked their work, even if they didn't, only because they read the authors previous work and they liked it. Also noone here bashed on it, so the rest of your comment is just based on past experiences of different work, which in this case doesn't mean jack shit.
Your second sentence is totally disproving the first one then, since you agree yourself what you say "doesn't mean jack shit". And how would you expect people to form an opinion about manga, if it's not with experience ? Pure theory ? You seem to think manga and anime fans are immature, yet you fail to show any empathy in your message. No offense intended, but I think there are better places on the Internet to come with the "though guy" attitude.
Anyway, I only have distant memories of Gintama, and still enjoyed this work. My only complaint would be it's pretty wordy, while all the best jokes were actually "short" ones. But perhaps the contrast actually makes it work better. I don't know about a serialization, but I think I'll definitely try to get into Gintama again.
