I'm not buying this "Gintoki can keep up because he's Utsuro's student!" excuse which was stated back in the Farewell Shinsengumi Arc. But it's one of several clear evidences that Katsura and Takasugi are about to join somehow and the three of them take him down. But it does make sense though. Since Gintoki is used to Shoyo's fighting style, he can predict Utsuro's moves better. But still, he's not strong enough to defeat him. The only way Utsuro can be beaten is if they cut the Earth's Altana sources so he won't regenerate. That would make every damage implemented on Utsuro count.
Well, it doesn't make sense to me, because it should go both ways. Utsuro also knows the fighting style of Gintoki. Utsuro's style isn't some cheap trickery that can be countered with familiarity, his prowess rather stems from an incredible speed, power, and perception. So being his student shouldn't magically offset the massive disparity. Keep in mind that Gintoki is also injured and exhausted.
This is reminding me of the nonsense from Fairy Tail where Wendy's enchantment magic served to cancel out someone who is far and away above her level. Just because two users employ the same style/magic type doesn't mean it can offset the difference in their proficiency/capabilities in the field. And again, it goes both ways... Why is being his student an advantage to Gintoki and not to Utsuro? Why is Wendy's enchantment an advantage to Wendy and not her opponent?
Then again, Utsuro seems to be too familiar with all fighting styles due to living long, so whoever fights against him without fully knowing his style may find themselves in an unfair disadvantage that makes the disparity greater than it actually is. I guess it isn't all that bad when you take that into account.
