Sailor Uranus is Gender Fluid. This article explains everything pretty well regarding their gender, and explains why “Hermaphrodite” is a slur in this instance.

I think I figured things out after finishing the manga (haven't seen any of the adaptations), but now I'm confused again lol. Probably bad memory. In any case, thanks for the article but it seems to be very American-centric in terms of pretty much everything, including treating normal words as slurs, so whatever (it also confuses things further by switching from talking about sex to gender). I didn't intend any slurs and Haruka is one of my favorite characters from Sailor Moon anyway. My initial confusion was mainly about the in-universe explanations for changes in her physical complexion, rather than identity or "sexual preferences" (I more or less understood her as a lesbian....probably)

I can understand that. I’ve had read other articles where Haruka  was put as androgynous as well. I know with the Sailor Starlights they specifically disguise themselves as men in the real world but they are actually women. In Haruka’s case though, she’s flexible feeling comfortable either being masculine or feminine and wears whatever to fit either category. I don’t personally think her physical complexion changes, especially when she is seen in woman’s body in every illustration in the manga.

So Haruka is "both a man and a woman"? A hermaphrodite? An androgynous person? Who?

P.S. Judging by Hotaru's age (12) and birthday (199x), the story is probably somewhere in the 2000s.

UPD: and judging by the timeline of the Infinity Arc, it's 1994...
