The newspaper likely shows that he wasn't fated to be with the cat.  After all, even when the main guy lost everything, he still kept the cat.  Because they were fated to be together, as a family.  She fills the void of his mother, and he acts as a father.  Whereas with the king's cat and the spy, it was just lust and entitlement.



Another theory could be, with the lust angle, that his lust made him think it was a fated match.  Meanwhile, it was just entitlement.  The entitlement that led him to steal.  Meanwhile, the main guy had more of a platonic bond with Lady.  Like father and daughter, or mother and son (once again, he was trying to fill that void of hurt).
