Another horrifying volume. The fight was a bit cheesy at times, especially with the Ki flower blasts, dragon ball z fighting and trees shattering, but it looked great when Sugimura was reading Kazuo's movements. Yet again we see the gritty nihilistic tone this story is attempting to create. From our first instance of seeing Sugimura, he was running around trying to find his best friend, only for her to die in his arms. His next goal was to find and protect his crush, not letting the same thing happen to her. And after he finds her, saves her from Kazuo losing an eye and fingers in the process, putting away all of his flaws of reluctancy and fear, confessing to Kayoko, living and dying in this moment of passion, she gets shot in front of his face. And then he gets shot. Ultimately making his journey meaningless.
I can only fear how it will affect the one most influenced by this game, Shuuya. Seeing what happened to Mimura was already enough to send him to absolute despair, Sugimura being gone might push him further. I don't think he'll absolutely collapse until Noriko is dead, if she does die, but I'm still fearful for our boy. Sugimura had a good character arc, and for it he was about to die happy, and perhaps overcoming his challenges and dying with the girl he loves was a relatively happy way to go, but man was it depressing.
But that's enough praise, I still hate Kazuo! Some of these chapters made me wonder if he's symbolized death and hardship, or the cycle of life, as in no matter how hard you fight it, you will die by his cold, emotionless hands. No matter how ridiculous this sounds, I have it for good reason, and because of that I think it really showcases how silly this antagonist is. For a volume with his face on the cover there really wasn't much there. I was excited we'd get to see more of who he was, not what he did. Seriously, the bullet proof vest gimmick makes sense, he killed Toshinori. But the way he learned what took Sugimura years to master in the blink of an eye, teleported to his side after the fight, and even after finally bleeding in this game, continued to be a cyborg from the future sent to kill, all I can say is it's really boring.
I love everyone else in this story, they're all characterized beautifully, especially the other antagonist Mitsuko. However, Kazuo, and to be completely honest Niida and the fat dude running the game as well are all awful. I've never been more bored by characters, okay exaggeration, but they are just evil dudes and go against the characterization of everyone else. Well, we'll see with Kazuo, I suppose they could do what they did with Mitsuko and completely change my opinion with her, so this isn't my final opinion. Very likely to change as the manga finishes.
So just five left now, two trustworthy: Shuuya, Norikio One questionable: Kawada Two psychopaths: Mitsuko and Kazuo. We're in for a wild ride now. I just want to add, I loved how Sugimura made defeat his moment, that was so sweet. And I am dreading the moment where Shuuya learns of Sugimura and Kayoko's death...
