I'm still struggling to get over the fact that Yamato ditched Honoka - a girl with lots love, nice boobs, and long hair - for a girl who treats him like shit and cares so much about him that she's willing to bugger off to America. The art, supporting characters, romance, drama... everything is great APART from the lead lusting after a bitchy girl with short hair simply because she can jump high.

Ah, I see that you're not familiar with the author's favorite type of male lead: a dumbass adolescent that likes to go through unnecessary pain and drama for a woman that's not only not worth it, but inferior to the other women the male lead is surrounded with.

Also, Suzuka being a high-jumper makes her as limber as a gymnast. Yamato (a.k.a. Wondertard) probably digs that.

Well, Suzuka (the character) didn't earn the label as "Ms.High Maintenance" among the fandom by accident. As you say, she's a real nightmare of a woman. A woman that would drive a steadfast man to a downward spiral towards insanity because of her fickleness, her almost perpetual sense of moral high ground, and her ingrained tendency of expecting  perfection from herself and from others.

As for the chapters you have just read, yeah, I found those to be very amusing as well (and a bit infuriating at times). It doesn't really help put the relationship between Yamato and Suzuka in a right direction when there's plenty of stubbornness between the two of them.

To me, it seemed like the author was emphasizing the main character's stubbornness resilience by having him go through plenty of pain and hardship for a woman that's obviously isn't worth experiencing all those ordeals for. By surrounding Yamato with women that are much, much, much, much less of a drama queen when compared to Suzuka, the journey to getting the prize (I chuckled a bit while typing this) just seems more fulfilling and satisfying. It's a really silly, but at the same time entertaining, plot-device.

I can't say anything about Seo's other lengthy series Cross Over since I haven't read it. I'm assuming here that you're referring to Kimi no Iru Machi (A Town Where You Live). All I'll say without spoiling anything major is that the female lead (Eba) shares some similarities with Suzuka, in that she's incredibly fickle and a woman that's high-maintenance as well. But that's it with the parallels. While Suzuka tries to keep up the appearance of an independent woman, one not to be tied down by anyone else or their flaws, Eba is more of an airhead that one always needs to be looked out for since she most probably will make a stupid mistake or get herself in a world of trouble when you aren't looking. Oh, and she has lovely long hair, like Miki.

I hope you enjoy it. Heh.

It's nice; finding someone I can agree with about Suzuka, with minimal effort. You kind of know there's a bit of an issue with the female lead of a story when on MAL - home to easy to please idiots, worldwide - the #1 manga review, for an 8+ rated title, is a 7/10 review dedicated to pointing out that the series is good but Suzuka is a bitch. For the fanboys/girls to rate the lowest review to the top out of agreement that Suzuka is indeed a bitch, it's safe to say her personality irritated pretty much everyone.

Oddly, it seems the anime fans/haters are more vocal about what they think about Suzuka/the bitch. I recall glancing through the MAL reviews for it previously, back when I  had finished watching the anime, and numerous people complained about Suzuka in their reviews. One guy even defended her from the attacks; claiming people hate her because she's a realistic character and not an otaku-pandering doormat. (If it's a choice between my right-hand/imaginary doormats and Suzuka, I'm staying loyal to my right-hand!)

(OTQ: Why did you give the anime 4/10 and the manga 8/10? Until it ended abruptly, it was a near enough 100% faithful adaptation, nipples aside. When I read through the first eight volumes, I got the 'been here before, seen that already' feeling. Did you low score it due to the poorer art?)

Yamato: I can't say I feel too sorry for Yamato, in spite of the level of Suzuka's bitchiness. Like you said, the author has tried to make him likable/respectable by never allowing him to give up; making him go as far as to becoming an athlete in order to win Suzuka over AFTER being rejected, ignored, and generally treated like a piece of shit she'd tread on. But because of Yamato's blind devotion to Suzuka, he treated Honoka badly - repaying her kindness by trying to have his way with her by force - and he's also ignored every other girl around himself. At the end of the day, no matter how badly Suzuka treats him, it's his fault, first and foremost, for always coming back for further suffering.

Annoyingly, I'm going to have to download the remaining volumes since Del Rey's 13-15 release isn't due out until August - the 6-18 release probably being set for August 2011. But I have a pretty decent idea how the story will advance beyond this point: Suzuka will split up with Yamato, get with Arima/come close to doing so, and Yamato will try to win her back by becoming the number one. Yamato HAS to beat his rival before the end, and there HAS to be more drama. The story has kind of come to a standstill ever since the main two got together, but I've always had the feeling it was the calm before the storm period of the story, rather than the Suzudra being over and done with a wee bit early.

And, yeah: I was referring to Kimi no Iru Machi. I wasn't aware the author had three lengthy series in existence. As long as its female lead has long hair, I'll be far more forgiving--me being simple like that. I'd like Suzuka a hell of a lot more if Suzuka and Miki had had the body of the other!

I *think* I see where the story is going: Suzuka is going to get close to Arima, probably just to inspire Yamato, and Yamato will then rediscover the motivation to become the number one 100m runner. That seems to be the plan due to Suzuka having no other males to get with and Yamato needing a new goal to get him backing into the running business.

The worst thing about Suzuka (the character) is that she epitomizes everything that's wrong with the worst kind of woman:

:: Takes hours shopping. Asks for advice and then bitches about the advice given. Expects her man to follow her around and carry bags all day.

:: Never apologizes; even when wrong. Uses the fact she has a vagina as a weapon in order to allow her to get away with anything. Sees it as her God-given right to be chased after by males because of her vagina.

:: Even though she cannot take 'hard love' herself, her personality forces her to be overly critical of others; her viewing it as wrong to just be nice/friendly.

:: She thinks it's fine to slap males, repeatedly, because she's female. Even when the male in question is madly in love with her. Would probably cry as if she was the victim if she was slapped in return.

To be fair, she does have some cute moments that allow the readers to sorta-kinda see why Yamato is so devoted to impregnating her, but the fact of the matter is that, if she was real and not just a 2D drawing, living with her would be a living hell. He'd argue with her 24/7, about EVERY little thing, if you just KNOW she'd use sex as a weapon; chucking him on the sofa every other night. The ideal wife she ain't!

What's amused me about her in the recent chapters is that she's gone from "I love you, and I want to stay with you--that's why I made a wish at the shrine to not be separated from you!" to "I'm going to America, and I told you last because I have a lot going on in my life!" as soon as the chance to learn how to jump a little higher in America became available. And, of course, it's Yamato's fault that he was told last, and Yamato's fault that he's been trying to set-up a communication link between the two; neglecting her a little as a result, etc etc.

Usually in these types of stories the female the moronic leads lust after are either the most beautiful drawings imaginable, are beautiful on the inside, or the moron and the object of the moron's lust have some sort of compatibility. But Suzuka loses on all three fronts to Yamato's other harem members.

He's got Miki - a tall, athletic, long-haired, slightly domineering but very caring and funny girl - who'd date him at the drop of a hat, as well as the sweetest, most sexy 'childhood friend' type imaginable in the form of Honoka; a girl who's willing to forgive him even after a halfhearted rape attempt, after she'd been kind enough to cook for him, with a simple apology... and he STILL stays in the hunt for Suzuka. Not even a clone of Suzuka with a nice/nicer personality (Yui) has made him stray from the path of Suzuka.

It's hard to be too critical of the series when, without Yamato chasing after Suzuka and constantly running into a brick wall, whilst pushing away other sexier girls with long hair (you might not know this, but I'm not attracted to 2D females with male haircuts!), Suzuka (the story) wouldn't be Suzuka. The series works because Yamato is an idiot and Suzuka is a bitch--we'd be rating a totally different story if the characters acted differently... Still, even though I fully understood that, it's kind of hard to swallow that Yamato is gay around every other 2D female simply because he saw Suzuka jump high--that's the only good point/reason for falling in love the idiot has!

...So, err, is the author's other lengthy romance work the same; is there another Suzuka type that the lead chases after like the plonker he is? I plan on starting it after finishing Suzuka.
