Planetes Chapter 13 Discussion

Great chapter about Tanabe's past. I can't believe this wasn't in the anime series! How could you leave out such a thing?! Pffft

Really like Tanabe's past



I just wonder if that cat from where she was little - was still the cat in the present



*So, did Tanabe knew she was abandoned?

These past couple chapters have not been kind to black cats.

Gotta love how that flashback with old dude's music life has lyrics about hearing Buddha speak and then he prays under a tree



Dude never abandoned that philosophy even when he became a father and had to work chilling out

Apparently she was a silent and perturbated kid, maybe because she was abandonned.

And again with this a black cat.

Really great chapter. I don't understand all the hate that Tanabe gets since to me she's the heart of Planetes, even if Hachimaki is the more interesting and developed character.



This is the first time I've posted about this manga and I just want to say that I've been really impressed thus far. I'm surprised the anime decided to shift the pacing of the manga so drastically since I think it's near perfect here. Granted, I think Sunrise had the right idea to reveal Yuri's backstory a little later into the series.



I'm interested in what is meant by all the cat imagery over the past couple of chapters. Black cats are symbolic of good luck in Japan, so I guess the contrast of appearance and nature is meant to represent the trepidation that comes with pursuing something good. I don't know. That's all I've got.

Ah so we get to see Tanabe’s backstory that we didn’t in the anime. So she was a adopted huh? The page with her father’s rock star days reminded me of Detroit Metal City lol.

EXACTLY.



The first two pages of that chapter have forever been burned into my memory. I love the fact that Tanabe's dad used to be a crust-punk vocalist and ended up working in sustainable energy.
