It's curious ... Mashima refuse to kill character when they die and here he kills a character while there were other solutions ...

Useless panel time on Erza Shitlet. ( I liked how she got creamed by fodder)Should've been Laxus that Makarov is giving his last words to.

Erza Shitlet's panel time made me cringe. Just an overall shit character.

Was his speech a metaphorical handover of Guild Masters title to Erza?

I think she is a right person to lead the guild, I thought about Laxus too, but he is kinda like Gildarts - always walks his own way and Erza is more Guild Master-ish type of person than Laxus.

Erza is no guild master material. Her handling of the first's secret was nothing short of a travestyWho should it be then?

Definitely Laxus.

Why do some chapters come out early? Who makes those business decisions, Mashima or his editor?

This has to be the most unforseen and anti-climatic deaths I've ever read in manga. There was no buildup, no...anything. I doubt anybody here was even thinking about Makarov before today. It's a shame because this could have been so much better.

(Insert arbitrary score)

You know you read scans right? And these are early leaks of the chapters, fairy tail comes out every Wednesday in Japan, officially, also you can read the chapter Wednesday on crunchyroll translated, that's the official release day.

I was actually more sad at Juvia's "death" than at this even though I knew she was going to come back but maybe that was because I never really cared about Makarov. Also, why couldn't they have used Mavis' plan? Until I know how her plan would have turned out I will see this as an unnecessary death.

Quite simple, Makarov doesn't want to see his "children" continue fighting in such a rough battle. First off, even if Mavis' plan may work but her plan ultimately still requires the guild members to fight. Fighting creates injuries. Makarov doesn't want to see that anymore so Mavis' plan isn't going to be an option for Makarov. And Mavis' plan also doesn't guarantee that the enemies will be stop for sure. It may turn the tide but it may not stop the enemy.

At least with Makarov we already seen the enemy being stopped. And more importantly, Erza and the others don't have to wear themselves down further. They still have to worry about the Spriggans that are on the battlefield after all.

In short:

Mavis' plan

1) Guild members have to fight and they have to tire themselves.

2) Cannot defeat the Spriggan and have to fight them in a battered state.

Makarov's action.

1) Guild members don't have to fight against large army and they don't have to tire themselves badly.

2) Still can't beat the Spriggan but at least they won't be so battered.

It's finally time for Makarov to die and leave the others behind. It was already hard to keep him along all the time, but not overpowering the villains. And now that Fairy Law's drawback has been explained, it now makes sense why he didn't used it during the dragon festival and against Tartarus. However, even back then, he would probably through his life away, since he attepted that at several occassions in the past before.
