I could write several essays about how and why Fairy Tail is empowering.
I don't see why writing about something that doesn't exist is something to be proud of.
fanservice DOES NOT necessarily mean sexism. Often times, in anime at least, it does- But in Fairy Tail, the fanservice goes BOTH WAYS. You think there's some deep meaning behind Gray's stripping habit?
Sure. But Fairy Tail happens to be one of those series.
Both ways? don't make me laugh. The fanservice is factually not on equal amounts for both genders. I wouldn't call a comedy gag, fanservice anyway. There is rarely pure manservice, it often used as a joke, primary example being gray.
Look at Wonder Woman for example. She's plenty sexified, but no one with even the smallest knowledge of feminism and it's history will deny that she embodies female empowerment.
That's because she is strong both physically and mentally. And doesn't have a wishy washy personality like Lucy.
Lucy is nothing but a damsel in distress, that's cries whenever Natsu or someone saves her for the umpth time. She never defeated anyone in the series by her own power and by her own concious. She is emotionally weak.
Lucy is proud of herself. Also, she's not a slut- She's a spoiled 17 year old rich girl who matures drastically throughout the series. And that scene with her dad- That is one of my favorite scenes in anything ever. Such a powerful and empowering scene.
Spoiled? from her introduction, Lucy wasn't a typical spoiled princess. She was normal. She didn't mature at all, what are you talking about. She is mostly a static character, that only had development regarding her father. ''Empowering'' you sure like throwing that word around, even when it doesn't fit.
Bisca proposes to Alzack, and when they have a kid, she continues to work and go on missions. She does not become a housewife. Bisca is insanely empowering.
Lol. A character that has this little screen time, is empowering? no female character in the series, or shounen manga in general is a housewife when they get married, what's the point of bringing that up?
Exaggeration..
Oh God don't even get me started on Risley Law. She's chubby, but she can change her body shape at will- she could walk around as her sexy version, but by CHOICE, she doesn't. It's not because the powers wear off- it's because she LIKES HER CHUBBY FORM.
Oh look another trivial character. Lol wow.
I don't think I even need to explain Erza.
Only logical part about your post. Erza would be the Wonder Woman, who is empowering despite her sexualization.
Cana is a great example of sex-positive empowerment. She sleeps around, this is stated in the series and is canon- But she is not shown as being a horrid person for doing so. She gets drunk constantly, but again, is not shown as a horrid person. She is still strong and admirable in her own way and doesn't let anyone tell her what to do.
Lmao. Cana is one of my prime examples, why the female cast is so terrible. She sleeps around? what?
She isn't shown to be a bad person, because more than half of the guild drinks. She is not in any way, shape or form strong.
She was one of the weakest characters, in the fairy tail world until Mashima shoehorned her being Gildarts daughter, I guess he wanted to make something of her, other than her purpose being fanservice and comedy. Which is failed anyway. Since the only time where she was strong, was because of her father, and not her own weak self.
Mirajane... Ohhh God Mirajane is just wonderful. Mirajane is a character where the fanservice actually adds to her character. She is a swimsuit model for Sorcerer Weekly, but she is not seen as a slut for doing so. On the contrary, everyone views her as the sweetest, most down to earth woman ever. And she does this work because she lost her power and had to support her brother- She's representative of women who have to become waitresses and strippers just to eck out a living for their kids (sibling in this case), and she does this BEAUTIFULLY by being respected despite what she does for a living.
Someone's digging deep, trying to find things that aren't there.
Women are constantly shown to not only battle men, but win. Constantly. This is a theme throughout the series.
When? the majority of the fights are won by men.
The female friendships in Fairy Tail are beautiful.
Female characters are friends in a series, that spouts the word Nakama 100 times per second. How surprising and empowering.
Fairy Tail is one of the most empowering series out there, even with the fanservice. It's SO EMPOWERING that it more than compensates for the fanservice 10x over.
Fairy Tail is a manga, that abuses it's female characters. Mashima knows he can't write for shit, so he uses fan service, as something to lure in the buyers.
I could go on, but I will stop there. =)
So delusional.
Now since, I'm done with this garbage. I will tell you why I think the female cast is terrible.
Lucy: Despite being the female lead, she is mostly used as fanservice machine. All her clothes being skimpy and revealing. Showing bath scenes, getting naked at random and for comedy. Having little to none development through out the series. Crying time after time. Always getting rescued by the hero Natsu or by the other strong guild members. Highly incompetent in everything and lacking any real personality.
Juvia: Introduced as a strong serious character, and then derailed to nothing but a Groupie for Gray and a comic relief stalker character. Her dialogue mostly consistent of ''Gray-sama''. Just completely abused. She gets very few scenes where she is treated seriously and they are far between.
Cana: Arguably the most useless character in the series. Her characterization beings and ends with boobs and drinks. Weak both in terms of ability and in terms of mentality. Only relevant to the plot because of the shoehorn I spoke about earlier. Just a garbage character.
Wendy: She is good and all but why use her bust size as a comedy. When she is just a little girl. If I were to speak that femanazi language, I would say that sends a bad message to little girls. To say that they should care about something trivial as bust size, when they are just young and are not supposed to care for this kind of nonsense.
Fanservice upon on fanservice. Empowering my ass. This is just you looking deep into something that is simply not there and simply wasn't the intention of the author. If you disliked this series, I can see you making rants about it and how they treat the characters but since you like it for whatever reason, you are trying to lie to yourself.

Most ignorant comment ever.
Cool, that totally proved me wrong about everything. Dem argumentative skills though.
