Weapons aren't good for protection tho. Ivar and the others were arguing that weapons would make them feel secure, however that's just not true. If the Lnu see the weapons, they'll think Thorfinn and the rest want to harm them and take their land. If anything, keeping weapons will just start an unneeded war. Instead, a treaty with the Lnu would make more sense, since both parties have been cooperating for quite a while now. I would've understood if Ivar wanted to hold on to guns from the start, but after such a long time of living and trading with the Lnu, it wouldn't make sense to arm yourselves.

I think it's now very clear that Thorfinn's naive idealism was never going to work and that it's gradually going to crumble around him, as he clearly can't so quickly change people whose entire lives have been devoted to war. Thorfinn was a very rare case of circumstances and backstory aligning for him to be able to escape the allure of war, but the rest of the village do not share that position and so cannot be so easily changed.

Little do any of them know that their arming themselves in fear of an attack is the very thing that will lead to it.

Given the "prophecy", and real historical events, it will be painful to see this manga end. Thorfinn's pacifism is going to be tested pretty soon. I'm fine if the story separates from real-life history at this point. This is a story that deserves a happier ending than the failed Vinland colonization that happened in real-life.

I wouldn't be fine if it separated from real life events. I think that's one of the most amazing things about Vinland saga, the fact that it's all real history. If it threw all that away in the end it would feel like a huge slap in the face.

Amazing how this just keep getting worse.

what do you mean? you mean the tension? it sure is tense.

No, I mean the story itself. This is just silly at this point, the disdain the author shows for the culture he wanted to portrait is ludicrous, not that this is anything new, but he just keep one upping himself. At this point the manga seem like a parody of itself, I just haven't dropped it because I'm so far into it, but I dont really look forward to its conclusion. It'll probably end with viking jesus thorfin sacrificing himself for the greater good of pacifism or some other nonsense.

Its amazing how seinen mangaka lose their minds, same thing happened to Vagabonds author.if you have a problem with pacifism you literally should have dropped the manga after the first chapter.

Thorfinn still on his no weapons motto, can't say about others but I don't see him changing his stand ever. A bit expected most of them going on with Ivar's approach cuz men really love wars. Though to be honest I'm kinda leaning towards his ideology too, as you never know when Lnu's have an overnight mood change and bam next day you know what.

Thorfinn will probably go back on the no weapons motto. When the inevitable conflict with the natives happens as a climax to the series. Although maybe a civil war among the settlers with the natives involved might be the climax. Either way Thorfinns extreme pacifism wont work.

To bear arms or not to, that is the debate. Unfair advantage making it a vote when you have way more men than women.

But personally, I would make an armory and lock it, making it a last resort solution. If people want to train on their free time they can use wooden swords/sticks, but no swords or weapons allowed unless they’re needed to react to an attack. I’m not sure where they’ll find all of the materials right away to make weapons though. Thorfinn needs to compromise with his group, he can remain a pacifist and not pick up a sword/daggers if he chooses to. Although conflict with the first nation is inevitable.

Full on pacifism has been shown not to work, even in 2022. A middle ground is possible where you can have weapons but only use them as an absolute last resort. Neither side is fully right here.
