Garm is a really unimpressive character, doesn't really fit a manga like this one. Thorfinn finally arrives, too short chapter. :/
Yeah, I've always felt the same about Garm. Not a good fit with this story. I almost feel like he's there to have a younger badass character now that Thorfinn has chosen the way of minimum violence.
I agree, that jump on the wall was very reminiscent of Thorfinn's entrance where he was tasked with getting the head of an enemy general.
But while Thorfinn was fulfilling more or less the same role as Garm is now (young gifted brutal warrior character lacking a moral compass)
and Thorkell isn't exactly what I'd call believable or think of as a realistic depiction either,
the two always seemed to fit into the story somehow and I was able to suspend my disbelief.
(Although, Thorkell's outbursts due to craving violent confrontations played up for comedic relief were stretching it a little too far for me at times)
With Garm (and sometimes Hild) I feel a little cheated.
Thorfinn's character has progressed beyond these kind of gimmicky characterizations and the moral position established to the audience also forgoes Garm's kind.
Yukimura might be planning to have Thorfinn influence Garm and Thorkell in the same way and convert them to pacifism but currently it feels like a cheap substitute for Thorfinn's "badassery".
As if Yukimura doesn't expect his audience to continue reading when there's no more action like this (although this would be a justifiable fear given how everyone reacted to Farmland saga), or he himself doesn't fully believe/ support the moral message he's trying to send ("if that's the direction you want to take with your story and characters, don't do it half-heartedly").
It's not as bad as I make it out to be but Garm just sticks out like a sore thumb in a story which already features quite an eccentric (partly unbelievable) cast of characters
(Maybe a different visual design would make it easier to accept Garm but I digress)
