Vinland Saga Chapter 109 summary:
"A new journey has begun. The destination: here and there."
Page 2-4
"The bride left the farm and the bridegroom was left behind."
-Halfdan comments on the wedding night that ended up in failure, saying that his family has suffered quite an embarrassment: Sigurd being stabbed by his wife and no one being able to catch her. Sigurd states apologetically that he will bear his failure for the rest of his life. Gudrid's aunt tries to reassures him by saying it's actually her fault. Halfdan cuts her off saying that Gudrid's intentions have no bearing on what's happened and they can't hide it for long. His family will end up becoming a laughing-stock regardless. He then addresses Sigurd, telling him they must do something, so their name won't be tarnished, and Sigurd complies. Sigurd's mom says she on the other hand is interested in knowing why Gudrid did this. If they don't find out, something like this might happen again in the future.
Page 5-6
-Halfdan tells his wife to be quiet, and she retorts that she won't and that he must lend a woman his ear more. Sigurd declares that he will clean this mess up himself and Halfdan asks how. Sigurd promises that he will drag Gudrid back, and won't return unless she's with him. Halfdan asks him whether he has an idea where she's disappeared to, and Sigurd answers she must've returned to Greenland. Halfdan says he's wrong, and that she must've tagged along with Thorfinn and co, who want to earn money to cultivate Vinland.
Page 7-10
-Sigurd says 'got it!' And adds they mustn't have gotten that far off and tells his parents he won't be away for long. When he's out, he tells his men to get a boat ready.
"Thorfinn, you abducting bastard! You'll pay greatly for making a joke out of me!"
Halfdan addresses Gudrid's aunt and tells her they'll wait for Sigurd's return to see whether he wants to keep her or divorce her. It's not clear who's at fault in here, though his own family was still a victim. Gudrid's aunt concedes. Halfdan's wife then says: "is that so? Haven't you thought the root of all that's happened could be traced back to you and me? All this happened because you think of women as only pawns on a chess board."
"I wonder what these chess pieces would say if they came to life? For example, this one would say 'I've had enough of being ordered around! I have a will of my own. I'll get out of this chess board and see the big wide world beyond!'"
"Checkmate. Women too have a will of their own, and would like to challenge a man to a game of chess. Don't forget this"
Page 13-14
-Einar tells Thorfinn they're getting farther and farther away from Thorfinn's village, and Thorfinn explains he doesn't want his family to get caught up in this. He'll tell them of all that happened one day. Einar laments not being able to say goodbye to Thorfinn's mother. He tells Thorfinn that his mother is a good person and she told him she regards him as her own son as well.
Page 15-16
Leif asks Gudrid what does it feel like to finally be on a journey, and Gudrid tells him she's in his care. Leif lashes out on her that she has lots to learn now that she's part of the crew and he'll work her the hardest. He won't go easy on her just because she's a woman, and if she complains he'll toss her overboard. She then promises she won't complain. Leif's son then orders her to follow his lead and clean up the deck.
Next chapter: Sigurd and co's ship...hasn't caught with them yet!
