wow, so Askeladd actually cares for the prince and the future of the Danish peple, or whatever they call themselves. But I had thought that he was just a mercenary that didn't care what he did as long as he was payed, and to go beyond your duty, like helping the prince grow a pair, was just a waste of time in his eyes.
He is a pretty deep and complicated character. My favourite in this manga. I didn't like him at first but he gets better and better as the story progresses and his past is revealed.
As a human his not exactly the nicest of guys but as a character his quite amazing. But this wasn't the only moment he showed his not just thinking about himself and his profit. The fact that he keeps our main by his side and doesn't just kill him is also quite strange. He knows he is after his life and as he himself said time is not at his side and yet he keeps him and lets him get stronger and stronger.
Also during his fight with Thor it might have seemed like he planned to take the kid but he didn't. The one who took the kid was the guy that was unconscious before. So the thing developed by itself a little.
He also seemed to actually respect Thors and although he passed his question if Thors would like to become their leader as a joke, it seemed to be a rare moment of honesty.
After Thors death he also kept thinking about how that man didn't kill any of his men, only wounded them.
His relationship with Thorfinn is obviously really complicated but he seems to care or at least have a lot of high expectations & trust in Thorfinn's abilities.
Since he doesn't have a wife or kids, I could see Askeladd "raising" Thorfinn in this twisted way. Similar to how the prince needs 'to be pushed from the nest', Thorfinn already was in many ways.
It's a little early to interpret it as such but the conversation about Ragnarok and the young and the old made it seem as though Askeladd is also trying to pass on his knowledge/will/legacy to Thorfinn, like a spiritual succession.
Currently there are around 120 chapters out and I fear that Askeladd will have died (not through natural causes) when I catch up with the current releases but I hope he'll stay strong in the following volumes.
