Mamotte Shugogetten doesn't offer much in terms of quality, even within the acclaimed 'Magical Girlfriend' subgenre. Any unique potential it might have is largely wasted due to a narrative that centers on weak and clichéd high school antics. The relationship between the main characters progresses at a snail's pace, while side characters are merely obstacles designed to test the protagonist's commitment to being a 'nice guy,' always keeping him at a safe distance from his clueless supernatural girlfriend.

The only reason someone might consider diving into Mamotte is undoubtedly the main heroine, Shaorin/Shaolin (hereafter referred to as Shao). As a 4000-year-old powerful spirit, she stands out as the most developed character in the manga, brimming with potential backstories and an endless array of magical beings at her disposal. The initial chapters lean heavily on the classic 'fish out of water' trope, showcasing Shao's efforts to adapt to modern-day Japan and her new master, the conveniently independent 14-year-old high schooler, Tasuke. Unfortunately, the story soon shifts its focus entirely to the protagonist's mundane routine, causing Shao to abandon her charming outsider perspective on the setting.

Other recurring characters worth mentioning include Ruuan, another bound spirit whose supposed aim is to please her master but paradoxically spends her time attempting to sabotage Shao's growing romance with their shared master. Additionally, the local priest and notorious playboy, Miyauchi, exhibits a creepy obsession with Shao, which is met only by her complete disregard and obliviousness to his advances.

As is typical in this genre of manga, the overarching story unfolds amidst episodic events like hot spring and beach trips, festivals, etc. There are nearly as many genuinely sweet romantic moments as there are contrived scenes of characters bathing, catering specifically to the target audience. For everyone else, don't expect anything beyond the bare minimum.

RftIW cultivation, world building and characters are pretty good. There are other cultivators that are stronger, friends and enemies. MC personality is really expresive and human, not like RotUI. Economics and politics are the best in this one (or the only one which has real effort on it). Things add up and the novel is good, it has a touch of slice of life which colours it a lot and disguises the qi/dian mandaments. the qi/dian direction is the only bad point of the novel really. There is s*x and various girls. 4/4
