While these elements are meant to clarify why Hitomi tolerates the abuse, they feel disjointed. The reader truly doesn't care because Hitomi's character wasn't developed enough for us to either like or dislike him, let alone empathize with him.
I completely lost interest in this mediocre story. Even in an angsty narrative like this one, it could have been executed more effectively. I personally dislike seeing emotional abuse portrayed in fiction—it reminds me of those individuals who enjoy manipulating others' emotions. If you focus solely on the sex scenes, you might find some appeal there, but the story left me entirely unimpressed. Finishing it was a chore; I simply didn't care about the characters.
