Unbidden awakening

"You really don't understand," I say, hoping for a response or an action from him. But he merely leans against the wall, gazing intently at me. Desperately, I fight back the approaching tears, willing them away with determination. Max approaches, gently cupping my face. "You have no idea," he confesses, leaning in closer. In that moment, I lift my gaze, unsure of what I wish for, but ready to meet his eyes. An endless silence stretches between us when he whispers, "Do you think I can resist you, Callista? You know I'm an addict, and you're the one I can't let go of. Even when I try to step back, it feels like my body doesn't listen to my own desires. Every breath I take is filled with your presence, and every day, I crave just a touch of you. You mean everything to me." His nose brushes against my cheek as he inhales deeply, savoring my scent. Our foreheads meet, and his lips barely graze mine as he speaks, "Can we ever return to the way things were before? Because I fear that might be impossible." With those words, he disappears, leaving me with his lingering presence and the weight of our connection.
