This is primarily a story about the strategic struggle between an Empress Dowager, who has money, land, and grain, and her ruthless eldest son, who is driven solely by self-interest and his ambition to become emperor.
Sixty-year-old Jiang Wanwen transmigrates into a book titled 《I Accompany My Husband to Conquer the World》. She isn’t the female lead; she’s the vicious female side character, the female lead’s mother-in-law.
When news of her eldest son’s rebellion reached the original character, she abandoned her unfavored third son and eldest grandson, fleeing with only her favorite second son and youngest daughter.
This led her third son to despise her, and her eldest grandson, Fu Zhuoxu (the sole son of the male and female leads), died in the capital, Shengyang.
After the female lead in the book learned of the original character’s actions, she came to hate her with a passion. She constantly sowed discord between the male lead and the original character, eroding what little mother-son affection they had left. Ultimately, the original character was poisoned to death by the female lead on the eve of the male lead’s ascension to the throne.
Having just transmigrated, Jiang Wanwen must face the fact that her husband has just died and has yet to be buried. She is confronted with a spoiled youngest son who dares to mock his own mother, a scholarly second son with no physical strength, and a ten-year-old daughter.
And then there is her eldest son, who has already rebelled, disregarding the lives of his family in Shengyang.
What could Jiang Wanwen possibly think? She couldn’t think. All she could do was drag her family along and flee for their lives!
Once she has secured their safety, Jiang Wanwen begins to buy servants, purchase grain, and cultivate improved crop varieties. She starts businesses to accumulate silver so she won’t have to depend on her son’s charity.
As for her unfilial sons, she will teach the ones who can be taught. For the one who can’t, she’ll just raise an obedient grandson instead!
Jiang Wanwen figures that if her son’s reign as emperor proves difficult, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to let her grandson become emperor.
But later, why is this ruthless eldest son so afraid of his own son, who is still the crown prince?
