While reading novels, Fu Erdie had thought more than once that if she ever ended up in an apocalypse, she would have no choice but to wait for death.
She couldn’t drive. She couldn’t read a map. She couldn’t cook a single dish. As for physical stamina… forget about running into a zombie, a sudden drop in temperature would be enough to give her a fever and kill her outright.
As a good-for-nothing of the new era, her sincerest wish was for the world to remain peaceful and prosperous, free from disasters. All she wanted was to hole up at home, scrape by as an illustrator, and muddle through life.
But fate had other plans. After a long, drizzly rain, the world mutated.
The stench of decay from zombies and infected plants hung in the air everywhere. Looking down from her window on the tenth-something floor, she saw panicked crowds, vehicles that had crashed and stalled, clogging the roads, and the little noodle shop she used to frequent, now stained with blood…
Every last detail dragged Fu Erdie back from her fantasies into harsh reality.
This world had truly mutated.
Fu Erdie decided to venture out to find her family, and while she was at it, take a gamble on whether she would turn into a zombie or awaken as a superhuman.
Summoning her courage, she opened the door, then stepped back and shut it again. Her neighbor in the hallway, now a zombie, was just too terrifying!
There was no way she could fight zombies. Her only option was to cower and wait for death.
By a stroke of luck, she had stocked up on quite a bit of food at home, enough to last her a month.
But as for her fate… she really only had two choices: die now, or die a month from now.
She chose the latter, all while bracing herself for the inevitable loss of water and electricity.

A month passed, time to pay the utilities.
The internet was down, so she couldn’t pay the bills. Every other part of the building was pitch black. But her room? Still brightly lit.
The toilet flushed as usual. She could even luxuriously heat water with the gas for a shower. And the little kumquats, chili peppers, and scallions she had planted on the balcony were thriving at an unnatural, accelerated pace.
Fu Erdie suddenly realized, she hadn’t mutated. But her apartment had?!
