Art 7
When I first picked up this manga, the main character's design was what attracted me. Regrettably, he is the only character with a unique appearance. The mangaka is certainly not a poor artist; however, there isn't much differentiation among the other characters. All the female characters look similar except for their hairstyles, and the same applies to the male characters (though facial hair adds some variety among them). The fight scenes are exceptionally well-executed. They are meticulously drawn out and well-choreographed. The rest of the artwork is solid—good but not extraordinary.
Character 6
Apart from Jintetsu and Haganemaru, all other characters fall into four categories: women seeking their purpose, men emotionally attached to women, bosses of territories, and henchmen. This should give you an idea of how each story unfolds...
Story 5
While I prefer a series with an overarching narrative, I am okay with shorter episodic ones. However, the further I read this manga, the less I enjoyed it. Every chapter followed the same pattern: a problem involving a toseinin boss, a girl trying to find her self-worth, and a guy emotionally attached to the girl (if there's no other guy, Jintetsu fills that role). Although the stories aren't identical, and a few deviate from the norm, there are enough similarities that made the latter half of my reading experience somewhat dull. What kept me from rating the story lower is that, while many stories were alike, they were each well-written. If the stories had been more distinct, I would have had almost no issues with this series.
Overall 6
Despite the second half of the series becoming somewhat tedious to read, my initial impression of it was favorable. I appreciated the main characters for who they were, and the premise was intriguing. It could have been something more original, but overall, I managed to finish it despite its flaws. There's probably more I could say about this series, but I believe a rating of 6 is fair.
Art: 9 Points: The artwork is stunning, showcasing a wide array of characters and settings that captivate the viewer, as well as intricate depictions of the various kimonos featured in the manga. I must admit, I'm less experienced in critiquing art compared to other review categories, so I'll keep this section brief and leave room for others to elaborate if they wish.
Character: 10 Points: The characters in Kurogane are incredibly realistic, each driven by deeply evident motivations, and often quite likable. Many of the people Jintetsu meets along his journey reappear in later chapters, yet their presence remains fresh and compelling. As a reader, I developed a personal respect, admiration, and connection to the numerous characters throughout the story, particularly Jintetsu. His strict moral code—refraining from harming civilians, children, or women—resonated strongly with me. Jintetsu is portrayed as a homeless wanderer, without a fixed abode, preferring solitude and often spending nights in abandoned shelters. Despite his past actions, he also embodies a protective nature, revealing a complex and deeply appreciated character.
Enjoyment: 10 Points: The manga was thoroughly entertaining, incorporating subtle humor, such as Haganemaru, Jintetsu's sentient sword, occasionally commenting on or expressing confusion about other characters' actions and situations. Beneath its humorous undertones, the story delves into serious themes of internal conflict and suffering. It introduces original ideas and intriguing concepts, offering me, as an American reader, valuable insights into Japanese culture, including terminology and historical fashion trends during the manga's era.
Overall: 9 Points - While I am a generous reviewer, it's worth noting that others might not find this manga as captivating as I did. Nevertheless, I firmly believe Kurogane is an exceptionally enjoyable read.
