When Lu Yi reached marriageable age, she followed her family’s arrangements and chose to marry through a union of convenience.

The Lin family was one of the top elite households in Beijing. Their eldest son, Lin Jinshen, had managed the family’s overseas assets while studying abroad and, after returning, became the new head of the family.

It was said that his personality matched his name: rigid, serious, utterly lacking in charm, a man consumed by work with no interest in romance or indulgence.

Before the marriage was finalized, they had only met formally twice.

At their first meeting, he wore a dark suit, a Stefano Ricci tie, and a silver tie clip. Everything about him was so meticulously proper it bordered on mechanical.

His cold gaze fell on her, and he greeted her in a low, steady voice, “Miss Lu.”

At their second meeting, he caught her having a blind date with another man. When he left, his tall figure faded into the night. After analyzing the pros and cons, he concluded that, in all aspects, the Lin family was the best choice.

There was one other thing he could offer that others might not.

Curious, Lu Yi asked, “What’s that?”

His voice remained detached: “Loyalty to my partner.”

Those around her couldn’t understand why Lu Yi chose him.

“You’re picking a husband, not a surrogate father. Lin Jinshen only cares about work and profit. Marrying him is like becoming a decoration.”

Lu Yi didn’t see a problem. They each got what they wanted, and she knew how to keep things clear.

However, after their marriage, things didn’t go quite as she had expected.

Before the wedding, he had warned her that he was busy with work, traveled frequently, and wouldn’t have much time for family. Yet starting from their wedding night, he fulfilled his duties without missing a single one.

Even his work trips came with a tally. Upon returning, he would make up for lost time in installments.

A few years into the marriage, Lu Yi asked him for the first time, “Should we have a baby?”

There was a brief silence on the other end of the call. Then he asked, “Now?”

“Yes,” she replied. “What do you think?”

His assistant watched their ever-composed boss grab his coat and stride out of the office. His voice was low and deliberate as he asked, “Where are you?”

One night that stood out in Lu Yi’s memory was when she woke up in the middle of the night to find Lin Jinshen holding her hand against his jaw. His expression was uncharacteristically tender.

“There’s something I’ve never told you,” he said.

“In my life, getting married was part of the plan. But marrying you was completely unexpected—an unparalleled surprise.”

Alex’s story is a hauntingly beautiful dive into the complexities of identity, mental health, and human connection. Their introspective nature and struggle for self-expression feel deeply authentic, making them a character you can’t help but empathize with. The relationship between Alex and Emma adds a tender layer to the narrative, offering moments of quiet solace and understanding. The symbolism of Alex’s notebook and their dark, layered clothing reflects their inner world with subtle brilliance. This isn’t a flashy or fast-paced tale it’s a raw, thoughtful exploration of life’s deeper questions. If you’re craving something meaningful and introspective, this story is a must-read
