“I’m… going to break you.”
His low voice grew raspy towards the end. His hand on my hip tensed and began to tremble. His deep gray eyes were overflowing with masculine arousal. Lee Kyuwol’s eyes were telling me. The gentle kiss we had just shared a moment ago was merely the beginning of his consolation.
The violent desire that had been hidden underneath his indifferent, gray eyes intensified the moment I gave him my consent, and he warned me that he would break my world. Within the murky fog of dread, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief.
“…I’d prefer that.”
When he heard my whispered reply, Lee Kyuwol raised both of his hands and ripped open my black mourning dress.

Not wanting to abandon the story halfway, my heart aches with anticipation. I wish I could adequately express my passion for this tale, but words fail me. I never imagined the male protagonist's development like this.
Typically, I base my choice of novels on instinct, regardless of ratings and reviews. However, due to my overly sensitive nature, I often steer clear of stories that might emotionally drain me. Angst and drama are generally not my cup of tea – except for yandere novels, which,虽然有毒,但至少在情感冲突上处理得较好。
Surprisingly, I dove into this one without any prior knowledge of its themes, tags, or synopsis, and I couldn't be happier with the decision. This remains one of my standout reads, despite the emotional impact it had on me.
Firstly, the character development is exceptional, particularly with Dayoung, the protagonist. She endured sexual abuse at the hands of her mother, which led to a realistic portrayal of her coping mechanisms – including a fear of men and self-loathing. Throughout her life, she carries guilt and shame due to circumstances beyond her control. When her abusive parents pass away, her mixed emotions further complicate her emotional journey.
Dayoung's life has been mostly solitary, longing for someone to understand her yet avoiding attention. Lee Kyuwol, the male lead, enters her world, captivating her with his perceptive nature and confidence. His attraction to her is mysterious, perhaps driven by instinct, but he displays sociopathic tendencies – though it's unclear if it's innate or shaped by his environment. While he lacks empathy initially, his genuine love for Dayoung becomes evident through the extras.
Their interactions are intense and well-developed. Dayoung is both attracted to and reliant on Kyuwol, but fears his violent side and his knowledge of her past. She believes she's a sinner, waiting for judgment from him, whether for her mother's actions or her relief upon her death. This dependency turns into a delicate balance, especially in the poignant scene at the lake.
Kyuwol,尽管有问题,但某种程度上与Dayoung形成了一种扭曲的匹配。总的来说,我非常享受这个故事。
On the other hand, our male lead, ML, stands out with his success, freedom to do as he pleases, and confidence. He'd make a compelling antagonist in a serious high school drama. Similar to FL, his character traits stem from his background, and he carries his own share of darkness. Despite his numerous red flags, he occasionally shows concern for FL in his own way, though their relationship remains unromantic and unhealthy. Neither of their mental well-being takes center stage, and FL acknowledges her own problems.
The prologue sets a gripping tone right from the start, with tension lingering even during quiet moments, as one waits for a potential blow-up. This isn't your typical light-hearted shoujo; it's a darker, complex story that I find hard to put down. However, I fear that subsequent novels might not live up to this high standard.
A huge thank you to the translation team for their exceptional work; their efforts truly enhance the reading experience.
Warning: Please consider the content warnings before reading this novel.
Review: This novel is extremely dark, bordering on discomfort. With an abundance of abuse and intense darkness, it stands out as one of the most challenging reads due to its graphic nature. The female lead, Dayoung, is deeply depressed and her thoughts veer into disturbing territory. The story contains numerous triggers, so readers should approach it with caution and seek help if needed.
The male lead, while intriguing, displays a well-researched complexity. Overall, the novel packs a powerful punch, exploring the connection between two damaged individuals using their trauma as a means to survive. Compared to Kimpa's other works, this might be their darkest offering yet. However, despite the heavy themes, it's a captivating read for those who can handle it.
Please exercise discretion as the content may not be suitable for everyone. This novel is not appropriate for minors or sensitive readers, as the abuse portrayed is graphic and disturbing.
The epilogue and additional content give the impression that it could be seen as a conventional love story, while the main chapters delve into the complex thoughts and motivations of the morally ambiguous characters. The idea of being in conflict with someone like the main character is indeed terrifying, but from an unconventional perspective, their dynamic works in a twisted sort of way.
My only issue with the novel is that I occasionally struggle to grasp certain subtleties, which could either be due to my own lack of understanding or the intricate nature of the storytelling.
