What stood out to me were the protagonist's character, the engaging romance, and the delightful humor. This is a definite must-read, and I anticipate revisiting it in the future.
Pros:
1. A captivating premise with exhilarating action sequences.
2. A charming and competent female lead (FL) that adds a fresh touch.
3. A well-developed male lead (ML) without unnecessary drama.
4. The side characters and occasional mini-episodes bring humor.
5. The absence of overly dramatic or melodramatic elements.
Cons:
1. The university setting seems underutilized; the FL is hardly ever seen attending classes.
2. Numerous characters appear and disappear without significant impact on the plot; cutting the number in half wouldn't hurt.
3. The FL's unique constitution allows for intimate interactions with the ML, which feels like an overpowered plot device.
4. I was hoping for a more fleshed-out subplot about the FL's long-lost daughter raised in the mountains and entering high society, but it remains underdeveloped.
In summary, while there are enjoyable aspects, certain elements could have been improved for a more cohesive story.
The ML has had his share of struggles, with many unexpected plot twists revealing more about his dark qi and their intertwined history. Both characters exhibit strong support for each other, with the ML's bodyguards playing a cheerleading role. Once FL realizes her feelings for ML, she becomes proactive, considering they're mature adults. The ML is remarkable in his restraint and constant concern for FL, who can be impulsive at times. According to Grandpa, their relationship is described lightheartedly, comparing FL to a pig eyeing a cabbage – ML, of course!
However, the ending felt unsatisfying compared to Butterfly's typical plot twists. While it was entertaining, it didn't quite justify a full 5-star rating. On the bright side, the translator did an excellent job.
Old Wu is a memorable character, and the ghost elements add a unique touch. The bodyguards are endearing, but Chen Yang stands out as my favorite supporting character from Season 2. This book strikes a balance between humor and depth, making it a satisfying read for about one to two weeks.
The male lead (ML) received a 7.5 out of 10 rating. He wasn't necessarily bad, but缺乏 depth in his character development. There wasn't much interaction, and he came across as bland, with a sweet background but never really utilized his power. Even his supporting characters had more presence than he did.
One glaring inconsistency was the sudden bravery displayed by the ML when fighting a powerful spirit, which didn't quite make sense given his background. The ending was rushed, with a climactic battle against a drought demon, and the MC suddenly becoming the Sixth Artifact. The resolution was hasty, with reincarnated spirits appearing and disappearing to defeat the demon without proper explanation or emotional moments.
There were numerous plot holes that left me questioning the narrative. However, despite these flaws, the book was decent if you're not too picky about intricate plots and character development. I particularly enjoyed the backstory of Feng Lou and Jing Li, which would have been nice to explore further in a separate story.
The relationship between the ML and MC felt somewhat lacking, especially considering the summary hinted at more intimacy. Their interactions could have been more passionate and affectionate; the ML seemed to consent to the MC's advances, so there should have been more sweetness between them.
Chen Yang has been my favorite character so far, and I've heard there's another novel featuring him! Could someone kindly inform me if such a book exists? I'd love to read more of his story.
Initially, I was hesitant to pick up the book due to the summary, fearing a clichéd, overbearing character. To my pleasant surprise, the ML turned out to be a true gentleman, a dreamboat, and an epitome of respect towards the female lead (FL). His chivalry and consideration were heartwarming, and it was refreshing to see the FL take charge in their pursuit, even though the ML had genuine affection for her.
The FL herself was a strong and independent character, capable of defending herself and exuding confidence in all aspects of her life. Her presence was invigorating.
The supporting characters, especially Wu Lai, were lovable and added depth to the story. His character development and humorous antics had me in stitches. The ending notes featuring him were hilarious and touching.
In conclusion, I believe there should be more male leads like this one. If you appreciate FLs who are self-sufficient, this book is a must-read. Despite the absence of confrontational scenes, the storytelling and plot progression were exceptional. Kudos to the author and translator for a fantastic work.
