[Mature Content] The body of a mermaid is a vault of treasures. Their tears formed the most splendid of pearls, their exquisite blood a euphoric drug for vampires, their luscious hair woven into the finest of silk, and their tender meat sought after by werewolves more than Heaven’s ambrosia. The creatures of night mingled within human society, fleeced in the wool of aristocracy, veiled in their portrayed innocence and nobility, their savagery continued to predate on the weak and powerless. Genevieve Barlow, Eve for short, was an exceptionally strange young lady. She had an alluring and beguiling nature, where for her twenty-four year old self had barely changed in appearance since her eighteenth birthday. She had fooled the administration and had gotten a degree so that she could have a better life. Most odd of all was that Eve had a secret she shared with no one. She enters the house of Moriarty, not just to earn but also to find answers on what happened to her mother nearly two decades ago. Unfortunately, things do not always proceed as one planned. Despite her cautious nature and desire to stay out of sight, a cold pair of eyes falls on her, that soon refuses to leave her out of sight.

Screw is both written and illustrated by Kaori Yuki, the creator behind the Godchild series. Unlike her usual gothic fiction and mystery works, this manga dives into science fiction and action. In 1992, Neji and his fiancée are kidnapped and brutally murdered. For reasons yet unknown, Neji is cryogenically frozen by a mysterious organization called GERA.

By 2033, Neji has become a Reverent, a scientifically engineered undead with incredible supernatural powers. He emerges as a skilled assassin but struggles with blurred memories of his past. GERA assigns Neji alongside two other undead killers, Luzer and Batsu, to eliminate their enemies.

Neji discovers that GERA plans to conduct medical experiments on his fiancée, prompting him to rebel against them and go rogue. Joining forces with Luzer and Batsu, he sets out to stop the malevolent GERA organization.

The futuristic world's design is intricately detailed, reminiscent of Kaori Yuki's fantasy-oriented works.

The manga is divided into three chapters, each with its own narrative. The absence of padding or filler ensures a fast-paced storyline, giving readers only a brief introduction to the characters and their roles. The plot twists are effective, keeping the story unpredictable. It shares similarities with James O Barr's "The Crow" graphic novel, blending similar motifs and writing styles while retaining themes from Kaori Yuki’s works like Godchild.

The undead characters retain human traits, all having lost loved ones during their lifetimes, carrying painful memories of their deaths. Each page unveils snippets of the characters' past lives, adding depth and evoking sympathy from the reader. Neji and his companions find it challenging to adapt to the new environment, striving to survive in it.

Overall, the story ideas are intriguing and thought-provoking, especially considering the real-life trend of people freezing their bodies with hopes of future revival. The art style is highly detailed, drawing readers into the pages. Character designs are unique with relatable goals. However, the personalities of the characters feel underdeveloped, leaving much of the world's lore unexplained. Some characters serve merely as plot devices, lacking substantial involvement in the story. There is limited character development throughout the narrative.

The villains lack memorability, with GERA being another stereotypical evil corporation aiming to dominate the world through illegal means such as human experimentation and slavery.

This manga offers an acceptable story that could have been more compelling. <p>

A story set in a futuristic world that blends sci-fi elements (cryogenics, automatons, etc.) with a hint of supernatural powers.

Story, 7: Despite its brief length of just three chapters, the world is well-developed. Readers gain insight into Earth's condition, the consequences of human experimentation, and the distinctions—or lack thereof—between artificial intelligence and human consciousness.

Art, 7: The action sequences were impressive, and the character designs felt innovative and distinct.

Characters, 6: While I found the main characters intriguing and their relationship unique, I was somewhat disappointed by the GERA organization overall (especially Luzer). The female characters largely seemed like tools to advance the protagonists' journey, which bothered me.

Enjoyment, 7: I finished this much faster than expected. The world-building and potential for expansion truly captivated me, so it's unfortunate that the series is concluded (though it does wrap up satisfactorily).

Overall, 7: I would recommend this to sci-fi enthusiasts or anyone interested in an action-driven shoujo series. Fans of Yuki Kaori's other works might also appreciate this. A fast-paced and enjoyable read.

Definitely not the best story out there, but it was definitely enjoyable. I would call this a hidden gem.

If you like stories like Lucia or The Return Of The Female Knight (I think that is the name), you will like this.
