    While making them incompetent and... racist? Classist? spurrs the MC into having to take action, they don't feel like characters, which is a waste I feel. It doesn't have to be some large thematic statement, but there's clearly potential for something there. Does the fact that his mother loves him while being morally bankrupt do anything to the MC? He seems to just ignore them for the most part and while they need to be there to drive him to work in secrecy, I would appreciate something for them to do other than occasionally move the plot forward.
